AC stopped working during acceleration?

Hi guys,

Hope someone can help..the AC in my 07 TL has worked perfectly when today all of a sudden as I accelerated a little harder than normal when merging onto the highway..the cooling stopped as I stepped hard on the gas and it started blowing hot air.

I've pushed the throttle hard before and it never killed my ac so I'm surprised if that is what caused the problem!

Dealer wants 259 just to do a HVAC test and will charge extra depending on what it needs.

Anyone have any ideas on what it could be ...I really dont want to pay 259 just for a diagnosis!

So it still doesn't work? Or it just doesn't work when you are accelerating hard?

Sounds like a belt tension issue.

Yeah it doesn't work at all....air is blowing on all vents but it's not cold.

i popped the good to see if I could see any hoses that may be loose etc but all looks good.

Next step would be to check the fuses I guess....if that doesn't work then I'll find a AC shop ...not paying the dealer 250 just to check !

at WOT the a/c is designed to turn off.
but it should resume as soon as you get off the go pedal.

If you are stating that the A/C stopped functioning during heavy acceleration and hasn't returned since then, I would "guess" compressor clutch issues. There is a self-diagnostic mode on the A/C that can be run to see if the computer can help identify any issues.
- can you hear the A/C compressor engage anymore?
- do the engine bay fans turn on when the A/C is engaged?

Even on cars when the compressor will disengage under hard acceleration, hot air will not immediately come out of the ducts.
Give it a try. Have cold air coming out of the vents and turn the a/c off and you'll have cold air for quite some time until the evap cools down. The car manufacturer would have quite a riot if the compressor would disengage under hard acceleration and hot air immediately fills the cabin.

Actually the compressor will cycle on and off under normal driving, yet the air entering the cabin will still remain cold.

Correct - once I floored the pedal to merge on the highway the AC stopped cooling and from blowing ice cold air one second - it started blowing hot air right after.

- I dont hear the AC compressor engage anymore at all
-Havent checked the fan...but Ill check as soon as I get home

Thought that it blew could air only when the accelerator was "floored", so didn't realize that it hasn't functioned since until reading further.
Need to put gauges on the system to determine if there is any refrigerant in the system.

That time of year. The daughter called and said that the A/C in her Grand Cherokee Hemi is kaput, hot air, so it looks like in about an hour I be working on that one. Can't wait!

Well - took it to a private shop and was told it needs the following:

- Ac compressor
- AC Clutch assembly.

Total with recharge is 1400.....F*CK!

Do you have the ability to do any mechanical work?
If so and you want to save the environment, have them discharge the system, then install the new compressor/clutch assembly yourself ($150/$200), then let them vacuum the system and charge.

A new compressor comes with a new clutch assembly so why are they saying you need both? That sounds really expensive, you should get a second opinion.

I just fixed my AC for $75 LOL. It is a coil behind the pulley. You can check by yourself.

Update:

Took the car back from that shop and shopped around at three other shops (didn't go to work all day!).

As per all shops ...compressor was shot.

So ended up going with the 2nd shop I went too:

Denso compressor with clutch - 459
New serpentine drive belt 75
R134 refrigerant. 40
AC OIl. 52

Total labor with system drain and recharge: 350

Came to around 940 Canadian.

I don't know jack about ACS frankly so I'm happy enough paying under 1k and having an ice cold AC back!

Also, $52 for oil-The compressor comes filled with oil.

Guess we can all sit back and second guess the repair, but at least it's working, the OP is satisfied and thanks for posting the results.

90% of the shop will say its the compressor but its not. Most of the time its a freaking clutch ( coil failed) . I know because I just fixed mine . The AC stopped working because the coil fail so it didn't engaged.

^^^

You could be right....hard to say.

From my point of view,. I went to 3 different shops and was told the same thing for diagnosis and price wise this was the cheapest quote i got with a warranty.

From my perspective, it's a 10 yr old car which I happen to love....if this new compressor etc lasts another 7-8 years or more....I'll consider myself a happy camper!

I'm not very technical .... And with my commute to work involving long durations stuck in traffic....the option of DIY on the AC wasn't feasible for me....I may have saved quite a few dollars but then again... Considering my limited expertise I could have screwed it up even more!
