AC problem

I'll start at the beginning. The ac would be fine then sporadically would start blowing hot air, turn the system off then back on and all would be fine. Then one day on the way home from work a very strange smell came through the vents and the ac no longer worked. I took it to have the oil changed and ac diagnosed. They found that the clutch and stator ( if I remember correctly) were bad on the compressor. I found it to be cheaper to purchase a complete compressor than to piece the old one back together. Replaced the compressor, shopped for the best place local to evacuate and refill the refrigerant. They stated that the system was only low 3 ounces and they couldn't get the compressor to kick on. When I picked it up I verified that i hooked the comressor back up! I have taken it to another local shop to see what they have to say. Does anyone have any ideas on what may be going on?

Thank you for all of your input. I figured it out. This could have helped others out in the future as well, but whatever...
