6MT - shift boot - HELP

So I went to the dealer today to get my shift knob replaced under warranty.
They messed up - the leather shift boot is not properly attached to the top of the shift lever.

They ordered a new shift boot, but I don't think it's necessary. Can someone tell me how can I attach the leather boot to the shift knob? Do I have to remove the shift boot completely (remove the ring that surrounds it first?)
Thanks, I just want to fix this myself.

Thanks, but I don't see any clips. What I have are two holes (front and back) in the shift knob, where I think leather should be attached. There are no clips. They probably forgot to include them?

Your knob should look like this. If it doesn't, they gave you the wrong knob...

you just push up the silver piece on the boot until it clips onto the knob clips on the bottom of the knob. Are there two, one on each side? Or did the service tech break one of them for you or maybe both?

From what I can see, they mistakenly removed the ring that holds the leather shift boot. From what I've read, to put the ring on the leather boot, I have to disassemble a lot of surrounding plastic and first remove the boot. Is that correct?

I just looked at the above picture and my shift boot again - the ring that should hold the boot to the knob is connected to the knob, not the boot. What a bunch of morons at the dealer. They made a 2 minute job into several hours. Do I have to disassemble the center console? How much work is involved? I don't trust them to do anything.

dont see why you would need to do that unless you are putting in a whole new boot with ring on it.

This is what the dealer did. Now the boot is disconnected from the ring. All they had to do was change the knob, because the paint on top was peeling off.
