5AT Filter Cartridge
For those who don't believe it, here it is. Remove the stock air box and look for the cover on the trans with three bolts and a fluid line attached.
And here's the old and new filters.
Yes, you loose enough fluid to make a good mess. I changed mine after I drained the ATF, but looking at the location of the filter (at the highest point) I don't think it would keep flowing if you did it full.
I like pics, so I thought I'd help others who share the same feeling.

108k miles. or 174,000 km. yeah, it looked pretty bad compared to the new one. I've changed the trans fluid once on that filter an I think the first owner had the fluid changed also. So 2 or three fluid changes on the orignal filter. I changed the fluid when I changed the filter this time.

princelybug - Not to get off topic from these fine 5AT owners, but us 6MT'ers do have a "strainer", def wouldn't call it a filter though. You have to remove it when ripping the trans apart, as I have done a few times at work. PM if you want more info! Hope all is going well, haven't talked to you in awhile!

Quiet, Rika Neenja!
I'm going to do the tranny filter swap out tomorrow, just curious how much additional fluid I'll lose when changing the filter? I only have a finite amount of ATF.
Thanks!
Thanks!

You will lose about the amount that fills that small chamber that holds the filter. Not much at all. Sure can make a mess though.
OP-thanks for posting these pics. Only problem was I did mine a month ago! Coulda used them then.
Should really be added to the Garage in the tranny fluid change section. Replacing this filter is very doable on 04-06 ATs.

FYI to anyone that hasn't done this, it's a complete whore to do. Albeit it is far from the most difficult thing I've ever done on this car, in theory it's quite simple, just getting that damn banjo fitting out of the way and getting the spring to seat properly and stay in place when putting the filter in, etc ,etc... I recommend getting ratcheting box wrenches and also stuff a bunch of paper towels down in the spaces beneath where the filter is, it saved me the mess.

nope, unless you drop the trans..

So the guy at the guy at the tranny shop said you have to take the motor and tranny apart to get the filter out....what a liar. Charged me $100 to flush the fluid. I know i'll be doing this job myself and for cheaper in 50K miles.

I don't think you will notice a difference by just changing the filter but if you have alot of milage on the trans that filter is pretty dirty. I would changed it. I changed mine and it wasn't to hard.

dang, this is tougher than expected. i'm stuck right now trying to remove the filter cover. it is stuck on there pretty tight. i tried prying the cover off and now the top part of the cover is slightly off while the bottom is still stuck in there.
the banjo and the line are also blocking the bath. i tried to move it over a bit but there isn't much give and i dont want to break the line.
any help guys? thanks

blah...took a while but i was able to get it out. just gotta pry out the cover as the seal is holding it in there pretty well. as for the banjo fitting and line you just gotta maneuver it out carefully. i pushed down and moved it over to the right.
the spring was a bit tricky as well. you just gotta slide the filter in slowly and it should catch.

One tip, get a ratcheting wrench. Something like this
http://www.amazon.com/Gear-Wrench-95.../dp/B000HBDWMA
It will make everything easier. It took me like 15 minutes just to get the bottom bolt off and another 10 to put it back in.
I drained the transmission before taking the filter out. Not much fluid came out doing the filter change.

I literally called 13 dealers in SoCal for the filter and o-ring. Only one had it and they only had one of each in stock. They had a ton of washers though.
It costed $47 for the O-Ring, Filter Gasket and Filter Element at the dealer and another 2 washers for about a buck.
It's pretty cheap here.
