3x3 tranny fluid question

OK. I already know there is tons of how to, what, and when... My question is that why, every time I tell a mechanic or and old school Honda guy that I'm about to do my 3x3, they keep telling me to leave the tranny fluid alone or it will cause the transmission to fail sooner? I know that the older Hondas had an issue with tranny fluid changes causing problems, but I thought that wasnt true for these Acura 5spd autos.

This is misinformation. There are tons of threads about sluggish shifts causing transmission damage..and eventual slipping. Changing from Z1 to Redline Type-F fluid; along with changing the 3rd and 4th gear pressure switches EXTENDS 5AT life.

I detest ATF threads, but the OP mentioned nothing about slipping, just wanted to know about a 3x3 change, so my response is the change the fluid and you'll have no problems.

As far a misinformation, it certainly isn't etched in stone that type F will eliminate failures as some have had transmission problems after using the Type F, and some with 200k with factory fluid no problems.

exactly. I'm not having any issues. I already have the fluid and all of the filter stuff, and the switches. I just keep having people say "leave that old fluid in there or your transmission will start slipping"...

Is that a dealer mechanic, or indy (independent) shop trainee, or your next door neighbor?? My Acura dealer recommends a 1x3 trans service every 15K miles, for every model, cost $110. While that may be because they wish to increase income, certainly they are not telling anyone to ignore changing the trans ATF. And various Acurazine threads are also suggesting ATF replacement sooner rather than later.

I think that a 50:50 mix of Redline racing/ D4 shifts better than the OEM Z1 or DW-1, in my 2009 RDX w/ 30K miles. But of course, you can read a few of the ATF threads, and choose your own poison.

I've learned a lot through this board about how to care for the TL AT. I agree that it makes little sense that older, worn fluid would be better for a transmission than new fluid. But it also makes sense to refresh it gradually and consistently over time.

I had the redline atf mixed with race fluid done, it works awesome. I strongly recommend it.

Where do you get your info? I was having some slipping in my 3rd gear. So I, along with 100s of other members, changed the pressure switches and did a 3x3 with Redline. I used Racing, Lightweight and D4. My transmission felt so much better with no slips whatsoever, 20k miles later it still feels great. I think it was the best thing ive ever done for my car. I know OP is not slipping which is ever better as he should use Redline now before it does start slipping.

50/50 isn't 100% correct. i think your supposed to have like a 66/34 of racing and d4. theres a whole thread on this that explains it all. i followed it by using 1qt d4, 1qt racing, 1qt lightweight. ive been running it for 20000 miles and still feels great. Also on the Type S there is no external tranny filter. So doing this every 15k miles is a good idea to keep fluids fresh.
