I didnt get a manual with my certified 06 TL I have a bad whine when I turn the steering wheel. What power steering fluid do I get? I need it now. At Autozone etc.

 

Have you gotten the power steering recall done? If not get it done ASAP. With the recall the fluid should be changed free of charge. The whine could be from the pump going bad.

get it done ASAP, an engine fire can start from the PS oil leaking on the exhaust manifold!

 

OK thanks. I am taking it in for nasty noises when I turn, axles I believe. WOW 1 month and 1k miles and this car has some real issues already.

 

The hose recall isn't going to be causing you to have a whine. I have a whine in my power steering pump also and it is either because of low fluid (which mine isn't low) or the pump has issues. A broken hose is just that, broken. If it was broken you would have fluid everywhere not just a whine. However, you obviously should have the recall fixed.

 

I had mine do the same thing. It was an o-ring that needed to be changed. Did it my self and only takes 2min to do.

 

Changed out my o-ring last week and now I have no more whine. Before it was whining in the mornings until my car warmed up.

 

The o-ring thread needs to be sticky.

 

I checked the fluid level and its fine. I have an appointment to drop the 2 month old certified 06 TL on tuesday to find out whats wrong with the front axels and now probably a power steering pump. WTF next.

The service guy said the car had the recall done already. ???

 

What kind of nasty noises? Clicking or whining? Clicking when you are turned and accelerate is probably a driveshaft. Whining when you turn the wheel, even when idle, mostly when it's cold would probably be the o-ring on the PS pump.

 

one thing to add, the power steering pump uses a connector thats PLASTIC! the pump itself is metal.

the seal between the two contract at different rates, causing it to go dry on cold weather start-up.

having found this out, the old unit was replaced under warranty. but the new unit, most likely a reman, is a lot more noisy... than the oem one brand new =(

kinda have to live with it. but i replaced the hose-to-pump connector with an aluminum one off of my old honda.

 

does anyone have any other solutions??

what additive/fluid would anyone on here recommend other than the honda/bardahl (honda otc fluid) power steering fluid to quiet down on the pump noise?

 

I need fluid in mine for a fact - any P/S will make noise when it's low. Mine has been giving me the occasional low moan at full lock for the last couple of days...

Any particular type of fluid required for a top-off?

 

When I needed a PS top-off, my local Checker had about 10 different kinds of fluid, but only 1 that was formulated for Honda vehicles. The brand was MasterPro, black bottle with orange lettering. It was less than $4. I topped off with this and my steering has been quiet ever since.
