2006 TL - Another AT Failure - Need Advice

Greetings all.

Some background info I posted in the 3rd 4th gear pressure switch DIY thread
"I have an 06 tl with 135000km on clock.A couple of weeks ago I got a check engine light which turned out to be 2 codes, a misfire and torque converter - the car drove fine mind you.

Took the car to the shop, cleared the codes and did a tranny flush with original honda fluid using a transmission machine so all the oil was changed.Car drove fine - no issues.

Fast forward 2 weeks and the tansmission was hesitating/shuddering before going into 3rd/4th the problem would come and go. Parked the car, did some reading on this site and had the pressure sensors changed today.

The car drove incredibly well but the problem came back a few hours later but not to the same extent, it would hesitate a little before shifting gears. I love the car and am really worried about the possibility of having to get a new transmission.

Would you suggest changing the fluid to Redline? It seems to be the popular choice based on people's experiences here.

what steps should i take to save the transmission - and is that even possible at this point?"

A day after the above post, the problem got substantially worse. I parked the car and had it towed to a transmission shop.

This shop supplies rebuilt transmissions to other shops and is very reputable when it comes to drivetrains.

The verdict is: needs replacement/rebuild.

The builder I spoke to told me that there are 2 updates that came out for the 3G transmission and that for some reason the rebuilt trannies from honda don't have them.

My options are:
1- rebuild existing unit w/updates -$1974CDN.
2 - purchase a rebuilt unit from honda - $2495CDN.
3 - purchase a used unit - $1,600CDN.

I'm leaning towards rebuilding the original transmission, the shop will provide a 2 years warranty and since they're a member of ATRA the warranty will cover me all across north america.

The builder is assuring me that it will never come to that and that the rebuild will make the transmission better than new. The updates are supposed to address the overheating issues these transmissions seem to have. I don't want to post incorrect information so I will have to confirm exactly what the updates are and will post the correct info shortly.

I have read a lot of threads pertaining to AT fluid and 3x3 flush. However, there doesn't seem to be any info on which fluid would be best to use for the first time in a rebuilt transmission.

Any input you may have is greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Rebuilt for sure! There are improvements in the rebuild kits over the OEM. +374$ for a warranty that is priceless on this trans. 2 years is really good typical is 1 year. Take it from me. Between my TL and Odyssey I have had 6 transmissions.

I'm most likely going with rebuilding mine.

What year is your TL?

Wow, 6 transmissions between the 2. How many each? Did you get rebuilds, used?

My mother's 02 odyssey has had 2 transmissions and 1 rebuild (on the second transmission). It still is not 100% and we're looking to get rid of the car once the warranty on the rebuild expires in 2 years.

I always liked honda products and owned a 03 and 05 accords with v6s and at and never had tranny issues, still have the 05.

Never expected the 3G tl to have these issues. Really like the car and hope that I won't need another transmission as long as i own it.

Some people are suggesting that I should get rid of it asap before it becomes a money pit

Your tranny is definitely shot. I'd go with the rebuild - from the shop. Honda's just paying a shop to rebuild transmissions - it's not like they're doing it themselves.

They already started rebuilding my transmission. The car should be ready to go in a day or two.

I am now trying to decide on the type of fluid I should use. I know this topic has been discussed a million times and people are staying away from OEM fluid when doing their 3x3s but I cannot find any info pertaining to what fluid is best to start with in a fresh tranny.

DW-1 fluid seems to be working well in mine. you can use redline for a little more peace of mind. I would let them use whatever they want in the rebuild and then do a 3x3 with whatever you would like to use after about 1k miles or so just to allow the initial debris to be removed.
