2006 Acura TL transmission problems

Sorry, this is my first time on this forum. I think I posted this is the wrong section earlier.

I have a 2006 Acura TL. Yesterday on my way home my transmission decided to start acting up. At first it felt like it was kind of slipping, but it was still going. While I was on the interstate, traveling roughly 70 - 75, I noticed it started slipping again. When I tried to go around a car but it felt like I put the car in neutral. I drifted to the side of the road, but there wasn't any kind of pull at all, just the engine reving up. Sitting still I could switch between the gears, but nothing was happening. Nothing clicked, the car wouldn't move. After leaving the car sit for awhile I was able to finally get it to go long enough to park it at the closest gas station. This took 2 separate tries to move it there. When I would get up to maybe 20 mph the car would quit pulling again, only the engine reving up.

I haven't changed the transmission fluid since I've owned the car. The fluid does look very dark, didn't look like there was any red tint. It was just odd because I haven't had any trouble with it up until now.

The check engine light has been on because of an 02 sensor. I went ahead and checked the codes again. There was some other codes, P0741 and P0780.

Has anyone else had any problems similar to this? A friend did suggest getting the transmission fluid changed, he said he had a Honda that did something similar, he changed the fluid and it was fine after.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance btw

Don't bother with just fluid. The whole transmission needs to be replaced.

I can't afford to replace a transmission right now. Do you think replacing the fluid or a transmission flush might help it limp along until I can replace it?

Well, if you can't afford to do a full transmission swap, what options do you have?! Just do the pressure switches and Honda ATF-DW1 and do a couple prayers hoping it fixes it.

This.

OP, definitely do the ATF drain and refill. Look up threads on here. Also change out the 3rd and 4th gear pressure switches, also popular thread on here you can search for.

Buy Honda ATF DW-1 from a Honda local dealer. I picked up 6 quarts just yesterday. Acura dealer is the exact same fluid except says Acura and is like 1-2$ more per bottle....

Transmission is toast. Same exact issues that mine had. Unfortunately the only fix is a new one in the ball park of $2500, give or take depending on where you go. I wouldn't waste the money on fluid/switches, put that towards a new transmission.

Unfortunately, thats how my symptom developed and ultimately led to a transmission rebuild

My transmission went last week much the same way. Does anyone have an automatic tranny for sale or know of a good source within a 100 mile radius of Philadelphia? Also does anyone know which if any Honda transmissions are swappable with an 06 TL?

IIRC an 07 Accord trans will swap in.

Using a very crude but hopefully clever method I think this may work.

Usually many parts have the same part number between our TLs and the V6 accords (in terms of drivetrain components).

And so I looked up part numbers for a 06 TL, and various AT components:
AT case
AT torque converter
AT mainshaft
AT differential

2006 Acura TL AT transmission case: http://www.acuraoemparts.com/acura/t...e-transmission

2006/2007 Honda Accord V6 AT transmission case: http://www.hondapartsnow.com/genuine...0-ray-306.html

And googled these specific part numbers...and google showed numerous Honda OEM sites with these exact same part numbers showing that they fit 2006-2007 Honda Accord EX V6 models. Some of the AT components also fit onto slightly older V6 Accords.

So it could be safe to say that the transmission may be swappable between 06/07 V6 Accords and your TL. Obviously I'm sure there are much more knowledgeable trans guys on here/honda forums that may provide further insight into this.

But this is one way to check for inter-operability. (Whenver I need a drivetrain/engine bay part that is likely the same between Honda and Acura, especially fluids like ATF and brake fluid, I usually google the Acura part number to see if it is same on a Honda car...then go to the HOnda dealer for slightly cheaper part of the same thing....)

It sounds like your transmission is loosing hydraulic pressure once the fluid gets hot and thins. You should replace the transmission filter and the fluid (do a 3x3 change). This will help the trans fluid flow better. Doing the switches won't do much right now, first do the filter and the fluid!

Also check and see if the D light is blinking on your gauge cluster. If yes, you can get the code read via the OBD II port.

Limping the car back and all the revving up in gear is probably what burnt the fluid. Try the above first and hopefully it'll help.

In all honesty, I'd change the filter after draining the fluid and then do the drain and refills 2 more times with the car driving/wheels turning (even if in the air on a jack/lift) for a little bit to circulate the new fluid in and the old back into the pan.

I took my car to this place and I highly recommend him. Might be pricey but its well worth the price. This place really knows their stuff when it comes to rebuilding Honda Transmissions
Lehigh Valley Transmission Inc. - Professional Transmission Services - 6610-349-7768

He works odd hours and I believe its only him and his son or son in law that do the work.
By odd hours I mean, one day he could be open 8-5. Closed the next day then works at night from 10pm-8am.

I had the same issues as you're having back in February and I needed a total transmission rebuild. I had 136,000 miles on the car at the time.
