2005 TL- transmission issues
2005 TL- transmission issues
Acura Gurus,
my 2005 TL with 131 k miles is at this mechanic’s shop and he texted me the codes p0721 and p0722 from the car. The car’s tranny started having issues the previous day - the gear started slipping a few miles into my drive and then went into neutral revving up to 5-7 rpm. I had to stop on the side and restart the car..it would go a few miles then do the same thing again ..got a blinking D as well..progressively got worse but I finally made it back home after having to stop and restart like 8-10 times over 30 miles. I did stop at auto zone on the way back and because the transmission fluid was a bit low, I put another quart in.
Got the car towed to the mechanic the next day and he gave me these codes.
He’s telling me the transmission is toast - he can replace it for $1200 with a 6 month warranty- he said he would get a transmission from a TL with like 50000 miles only so it would last me a few years easy. or he can rebuild it for $3000 with a 3 year warranty.
i have researched on this forum for similar issues and see that a replacement of pressure switches and drain and fill of transmission fluid solves these issues. Is that all that I would need to get done to get my car working again? Or are those solutions for other error codes and The solution for this is to replace or rebuild the transmission?
I do realize that I should not have had the car towed over to this mechanics shop because now I have to fork over at least $1200 to get it fixed. I am not even sure if he is skilled to diagnose and fix the real problems hence posting here for some guidance.
i have had the car almost 14 years now and have maintained it well - but it does have an oil leak and the engine mounts are weak as well so not sure how much longer I will be able to keep it running well even after getting this latest issue resolved.
Thank you.

If you're planning on keeping the car for a while, consider the "AV6" transmission as a replacement. This transmission is from a 2006-2007 Honda Accord V6 (has a manufacturing code of BAYA) and is the most robust H5 transmission Honda made which will bolt up to your engine.
What would be a reasonable price to get it rebuilt or replaced with a used transmission?

Check car-part.com for a transmission; I've seen them range from $400 to $1,200; a lot depends upon the area of the country you live in and local availability. The same thing applies to the labor, shop around, some places will be more agreeable than others.
Thank you. This mechanic replaced the tranny for $1200 and gave me a 6 month warranty - He paid $560 for the transmission from a 2005 TL with 68,000 miles and the rest for labor. Got car back on Friday- it’s running ok so far..
