2005 TL issues

Just inherited a 2005 TL with nav (from my wife, so it's actually just moved over 1 space in the garage). It has a few issues I'd like to get resolved so that it can be driven for another couple of years:

1. Whine when turning the wheel when car is cold. Also a more subtle whine when accelerating. From what I have read on here this seems like it's either the O-ring, PS pump, or both. Is that about right?

2. The navigation screen (and audio) only wokrs about 1/3 times the car is started. The two cases are: nothing on the screen (66% of the time) or "downloading software..." followed by code input, and then everything works (33% of the time). However the next time the car is started, it will have to download the software again and the code input comes back up. Nothing "sticks".

What are your thoughts on these two issues / best way to approach a dealer or shop to save $ on these?

sounds like the dvdnav drive is about to go
and or the disc is scratched.
it cost about 358 to send the drive into apline......

as far as the whine; it could be powersteering o-ring and or powersteering pump

Thanks. I will check with Alpine. As for the steering - is it worth it to replace the O-ring first, or will it be better to just do the whole PS system including O-ring? I'd hate to pay for labor twice. I believe this car was recalled for power steering and got that recall done at about 20,000 miles (the car now has 60,000). I wonder if it is worth it to argue that the recall was not done properly.

the o-ring is like 2 cents.
and you can easily do it yourself.

Cool... I looked up instructions for the O-ring and it does look very easy. Thanks. I had hoped there was some cheap solution to the nav but I think you are right, the drive is probably bad. It was previously causing skipping/pausing in the map animation so it's probably just bad.

I was having the same problems with my nav in my wifes 05 tl... sent it to Alpine and problem was solved.

They do warranty what they fix so if it doesnt fix it definitely send it back. They rebuilt mine with all new parts and it still didnt work, had to send it back a second time at its now flawless.

Change the O ring first.

It's such an easy fix to do, it's practically stupid proof. Well, just don't get fluid on the belt.
