2004 tl automatic transmission question
I've been reading a lot about the transmissions on the automatics. One member even refers to them as autotragic.
I wish I had found this forum before I bought my car last month but it was buying the car and googling a problem that led me to the forum.
Now onto my question. My car has 131,600 miles on it. I drained the atf and replaced the pressure switches about a weeks and a half ago.
When I accelerate from a stop, I can hear a slight whirring sound. I believe it only happens in the first two gears.
I'm scared from all that I've been reading. Is my transmission about to die?

Some TLs just seem to whine like hell in the first few gears. I haven't heard a satisfactory explanation for it. According to an article I once read on 2000s Honda V6 transmissions, it may be bearing walkout on the transmission case. But I don't know.
Mine has done it since I bought it. It died at 116k and was rebuilt, including the case. The whine actually got louder.

Yeah, mine sounds almost like a supercharger whine. I gotta do some listening because I swear it may have gotten better after I replaced all the power steering pump seals.
15k miles with it sounding like that, sitting at 115k on my '06. Still shifts the same. I was paranoid at first, found some posts asking this same question. Honestly, I wouldn't worry about it. There's people with well over 200k on their original auto trans. Keep up on the fluid, pressure switches, do the filter change and you should be fine. I actually had my car dropping out of gear and through a post on these forums and a talk with a transmission builder, I fixed the issue for free. Basically the gear position sensor was causing the issue.
The killer of this trans is excessive heat build up. Most often caused by the clutch packs slipping against each other longer than they should because the tranny pressure switches are out of spec.

I figured it out on my car. My intermediate shaft heat shield was loose underneath the car. I just tightened two bolts down there with a 12mm socket and the sound doesnt come up when I accelerate. I think this is a super common problem as there is a lot of discussion of this already. See https://acurazine.com/forums/3g-tl-p...shield-839129/.
