12v power outlet/cigarette lighter not working

I have a 2005 TL with nav. Yesterday my phone's charger stopped working so first I thought it was the charger. After trying to other chargers I believe my outlet isn't working. I read online a fuse might be out. I called advance auto parts if I buy the fuse from them if they will replace it but they said no. What are my options? I don't want to go to a mechanic and spend hundreds on fixing up the lighter outlet of a 10 year old car.

Check the fuse yourself and replace it yourself. There's a fuse box inside the car located on the drivers side floor and one underneath the hood also on the drivers side.

If you can pump gas you can change a fuse.

Changing a fuse is just unplugging it and plugging a new one in, it's that easy. Just take a look at the diagram on the cover of the fuse box and it'll tell you which one needs replacing.

On another note, I have a Moto quick charger that's supposed to use the whole 12v. My power outlet in front of the shift knob doesn't seem to be charging it at a full 12v, but the charger itself works fine in my other vehicles.

You can replace the fuse yourself.

The fuse box covers have fuse block diagrams.
The last few pages of the owner's manual also has the diagrams of the fuse boxes and fuse ratings.

There is a fuse puller in the fuse box under the driver's side dash-- use it to pull out the suspect fuse. Look at it to see if the fuse is blown, and replace the fuse with a fuse of the same rating if it is.

IIRC, there are also several spare fuses of different ratings in that fuse box too.

How will I know which is the bad fuse? The Power outlet inside the middle console isn't working either.

They both run off the same fuse.

I looked at the owners manual and it doesn't say which fuse powers the outlets.

After pulling the suspect fuse, you'll see the metal piece that completes the circuit under the clear plastic fuse housing. If the metal is severed or looks burnt, the fuse is probably bad. You can also pull a known good fuse for comparison.

Take a look at page 258 and the list of "Circuits Protected" in the diagram chart.

You didn't look hard enough: Under Dash Fuse Box: Fuse #9, Accessory Outlet.

There's a fuse puller in the Under Hood fuse box. Of course, this is all covered in the Owner's Manual....

Just take the bad fuse in with you. There are a couple of different physical sizes of the fuse form factor. Again, I believe it's all detailed in the Owner's Manual.

Done. Thanks guy. Only bad thing was that I had to buy a pack of fuses that was 5 bucks when all I needed was one.

Hindsight is 20/20, but you should've bought a multi-pack. Most auto parts stores sell them. In the end, $5 isn't an expensive learning experience

Just check voltage drop at f fuse when car is working. Why does everyone sleep at electro physics classes except me? Electro physic and related electro classes are only worth something in school.
