08 TL-S 6MT - starter related issue?

hey all,

2008 TL-S with approx 85000miles. brand new oem battery put in 1 week ago.

random occasions - she won't start ... i put the key in, turn it, dashboard lights come on as expected but doesn't start. the green key is not flashing either.

but - then... I take the key out , flip it around - try again and she starts up no problem. once she starts up, there are no issues - she drives like normal.

starter related? ignition related? wiring?

will post a video soon!

...to add... the issue was also happening before the battery was changed out. I replaced the battery to see if that was the cause.

I’ve seen tsx and other 4 cylinder Honda’s having starting issues because of a bad starter. Something about corrosion inside the starter and sometimes when you go to start the engine it’s on a corroded Section and doesn’t allow the starter to rotate.

More than likely your battery terminal connections.
I had been experiencing basically the same issue a few months back. Alot of feedback said it was the starter going bad. However, i took a voltage reader and it showed starter was stilling getting power. Ended up being my positive battery terminal having been loose. Tightened and cleaned it up and no more issues

hmmm, that's what i thought originally - i did get the battery replaced at the dealer and told them to clean up the connections and what not.. who knows if they did that.. i may go and replace the + cable/wiring.

I would check all connections on battery and grounds. Couldn't hurt to look at the cable to the starter. Most likely a connection issue.

I still wouldn't rule out the starter. I'd check to make sure that the switch on the clutch pedal is still working properly, but when my starter started going out, I had the exact same symptoms of not starting up the first time. I thought it was just a fluke, but about a week later car wouldn't start at all. Took it out, got it tested, O'Reilly's confirmed that it was the starter. Not too hard to change out; the only hard piece was the bolt underneath the battery tray.

so far its been fine...what i've been doing is... leaving it in 1st or R gear when parked. once I get into the car, I shift it to neutral and start - it starts right up. i'll keep an eye on it.

My TL had a similar issue 2 hours after I bought it, half the time it would start the other half it wouldn't. Got sick of it after two weeks and put a new starter on after everything tested okay. The broken starter always tested good at the parts stores, even though it didn't always work on the car.

I had a similar issue a few years ago. Turned out the + battery cable was corroded on the inside where you couldn't see it, replacing it did the trick!

Did a check on battery terminal connectors. Looks like they really cleaned it up at dealer when Installing the new battery.

Phew. Done. And yup. It was the cursed battery tray that took forever.

Definitely glad I had a shit ton of sockets extensions and breaker bar.
