07 TL-S 6MT 3rd gear

Does anyone else with a 2007 6MT Type S notice that 3rd gear requires a little extra effort to get it into gear some times? I've been driving manual for many years now so I know more than the basics. I don't believe I've caused any undue wear on the car. My car has about 1300 miles on it and sometimes when I'm slowing down and I want to gradually shift into 3rd, I've almost missed getting the car into 3rd because it didn't "click" all the way in.

I've also notice the same when I'm accelerating quickly up the gears. I've actually let the clutch out before it was fully in 3rd because the shifter offered more resistance than normal on one or two occasions and it popped back out. It's not terribly bad or anything, but it's a weird feeling after coming from my TSX which had a confident "click" into 3rd (or any gear for that matter). I'm just curious if anyone else has noticed this? I also slightly noticed this during a test drive of another 2007 TL-S (not the one I bought).

common issue w/ 6speeds. Easy fix, just change out the factory fill in the tranny to gm synchromesh friction modified, no more problems

Change the tranny lube with only 1300 miles on my car? I could see if I had 25K+, but that seems like a weird fix. Also, how do I know the GM synchromesh product is the correct weight/oil for this transmission? I don't want to cause excessive wear to my new car.

It's hard to believe but it's true. There is just something "up" with the 3rd gear in the 3G 6MTs and their sensitivity to the MTF. Trying the new "improved" Honda/Acura MTF has helped some on the board. Some have even got the dealers to do it for free. I'd try that first. If that doesn't work the the GM Synchromesh Friction Modified will do the trick. Many owners have put many miles on the GM stuff in TLs, Honda S2000s and other Honda/Acura cars.

My history:
5K changed factory fill to Honda MTF- Got a bit better and then came back
12 K changed factory fill to "Improved" Honda MTF. Got worse. (others got better)
Two weeks ago - GM SM Friction Modified . UN-FREAKIN-BELIEVABLE. Not one 3rd single problem since. You simply have to experience it to believe it.

Once Acura dealer in CT is even using the GM SM Friction Modified stuff for customers that want it. Other Non- OE fluids less people have reported using are Redline MTL or Amsoil MTF

I was hesitant at first for the same reasons as you but eventually figured it was worth a try.

The search doesn't index anything below 3 characters ("3rd", but I guess I could search on "third") and I haven't seen anyone else mention this on a 2007 Type S. Is this the same exact 6MT as the prior years? Given the engine has a little more HP over the prior years, I didn't want to assume it was the same transmission. It seems like I've confirmed the issue still exists from what everyone else has seen in the past.

Thanks Adobeman. I remember reading about the GM SM in the past, but I recall people doing it just as a bonus, not to fix the 3G TL 6MT. I'm new to the TL parts of AZ, so I haven't follwed many of the threads here).

I'll ask the service dept. when I bring the car in for service next time about changing the MTF. I guess they didn't put the newer honda MTF into my car. Which dealer in CT did you find using the GM SM? I bought mine at Morande in Berlin (even though I'm from MA).

As an aside, I did find all your info/work related to DVD-Audio (through searching of course ) . Thanks for all the good stuff; I've learned a lot and I'm happily enjoying the quality! I just picked up Linkin Park's reanimation DVD-A for $4.99 used and I love it.

The local Acura dealer outside of Milwaukee has been using the GM stuff for a long time until Honda was reported to have a fix. Honda came out with a new fluid for 07 that is intended to take care of this well known and well documented problem. I have a new 06 that now has about 2300 miles on it and third gear was a problem from the start. It was getting a little better as the miles added up but it was still unacceptable. I brought it back to the dealer and they put the new Honda fluid in. It is a little better but definitely not where it should be. I plan on bringing it back in and let them decide how they want to handle it. It sounds like the GM fluid is the ticket to blissful harmony with my tranny.
