Post 06 Auto Downshifting Issue

I've searched the threads and didn't find a thread pertaining to this issue I've been noticing lately.

The TL has 5K on it and I drive with it in auto mode all the time and rarely use the sequential shift option. I've been noticing whenever I begin slowing down to a stop and the car hits 40mph it downshifts horribly. I see the RPMS go up and down as the downshifting is occurring. I drive the TL in full auto mode. I also feel this when cruising say at 35mph and then I have to come to a stop it also occurs at 20mph.

I’m not braking hard or anything just braking normally, but the combination of braking and the engine downshifting makes for a less than desired feeling of attempting to stop quickly which is not the case. I didn't notice this at the beginning but now that the car is getting up there in miles it’s more noticeable. Again, I'm not using the sequential shift option. Anyone else with a similar situation? I'll be taking the car in for an oil change soon so I'll be sure to ask about this.

The car is supposed to downshift automatically however it should not be very noticeable. I notice mine doing it but only if I'm watching the tach and the rpm's do not vary much. If it's doing it to the point that you can "feel" it then somethings out of whack.
Take it to the dealer. If they say that it's normal ask them to take a ride with you in another 06 from the lot. Once the other one doesn't do it they will have a tough time convincing you that it's normal. Good luck.

The only time mine does this is when I am going down a hill and the car starts to speed up due to gravity...not the accelerator being pressed...the car will autodownshift to keep you from speeding up. My guess is...you are on a hill when this happens or the car is speeding up but you are not accelerating (pressing the gas). I dont notice this just by braking though....

I've actually been noticing this a lot as well ... around 20mph during normal braking the car would jerk as if it is aggressively downshifting ... guess i have to go to the dealer soon @___@ and also when I start up my engine in the morning the ignition makes this weird screeching noise, maybe because of the cold weather in socal nowadays ... anyone know of this?

Unfortunately, I'm not the only one with this issue judging by your responses. I asked my friend who also bought a TL w/AT and he states he does not notice it. So I guess when I take it to the dealer I'll ask about a solution to this. Also thanks to Shalooby for the good idea of having them drive another TL from the lot.

If someone beats me to the dealer let me know what kind of response/solution you get from them if any.

check your ATF levels, also how hard do you push the gas, and aso do you let the car idle then pust the brakes to stop or do you apply the brakes all throughtout lightly to stop cleanly?

That sounds like the converter isn't unlocking during the shift.

Grade Logic Control

You're noticing the Grade Logic Control feature. It seems to think you're going downhill when you really aren't.

In my case, it's noticable, but certainly not jerky.

I didn't notice it doing this at first on my 07, then I thought something was horribly wrong, but now I'm used to it.

Actually, after I learned about the feature, I became impressed with it.

Same thing on my 2007, since day one i notice this difference with my 2005 Tl. It's more pronounced but not so , and it's good feature to have engine brake, it saves you some brakes

This happens on level road. It's just transmission programing.
