Long time lurker, first time poster. Hoping to get clarification from the gurus on a little problem with the navi I'm having.

Backstory: >Bought my boss' car. His navi didn't work, didn't pay much attention to it because I can live without a navigation system. >>Cleaned the battery terminals from corrosion. >>>Radio anti-theft-locked. Fuck.

Problem: Can't enter anti-theft codes since navigation is a black screen.

Of Note:
-the screen looks like it's trying to reset itself a few times per second; sometimes it flashes a few white and black horizontal lines before fading; there is backlight to the screen.
-the navigation actually came on twice since November 2014, but only for a few minutes each time. First time, I scrambled to get the codes, entered the navi code but didnt figure out where to enter radio code, and the screen shortly went back to being black. Second time it came on, I tried starting the radio to enter the radio code after I punched in the navigation code, but to no response. Radio didn't respond nor was there an option on the screen to enter the code. Maybe it was because the radio power button could have frozen. It was nearly -40*C outside, and the first time navi came on it was colder than -30*C. I'm almost certain the navi worked due to the freeze. I left my car outside overnight both times.

Dealership DowntownAcura in Toronto quoted me $3400 CAD (like $2700 USD) for a new navigation unit. Without installation.

What could have caused the navi to come on during extreme cold and even if it did come on, is the unit toast if it's trying to restart itself a few times per second? (Black screen, faint blinking)

In the meantime I'm going to check out some TL navigations on EBay
