05 6 Speed NOT going in reverse!!! ahhhh

Ok.. SO i have an 05 6 speed that typically has the 3rd gear issue but it hasn't bothered me enough to go to the dealer.. Today as im pulling up to my house, I put my car in reverse to back into my driveway and all i hear is grinding.. I move things around and once again i get GRINDING!! Soooooo after about a min of getting nothing, i manage to just make it around a car and i go down my hill and turn around and come back up the hill so i can kinda roll into my driveway...

My brother said its proabably the reverse idler gear.. Now my concern is would this be covered under warranty? The car has about 45k miles on it and i bought it with 38k miles on it from an Acura dealership...

Car is fine in forward gears. As for modifications, all i have is an AEM CAI and i swapped the tailights to the type S ones....

SOMEONE PLEASE HELP!

If it is still under warranty just take it in to get fixed. Intake should have nothing to do with your warranty since it is a drive train problem. Your tailights might void your warranty though ;p

Yes, get it taken care right away, the 3rd gear issue just spread its infection to the reverse gear lol.

There insurance wont do it because you are under the age of 25. It is like renting a car.

Most dealers are using Enterprise by now and they rent to 18 yr and older.

If you need reverse, shut the engine off, put it in reverse and start it back up.
Make certain you're stopped then put the trans in first or third before entering reverse.

Just for kicks, try this.

When you are ready to shift into reverse (at a full stop, of course), shift into second or third gear first and then try to go into reverse. See if this helps and if it does, I'll tell you why.

See if it will go into reverse with the car off. Are any of the forward gears slipping? You could have a clutch going bad.

I had the exact same problem with mine. The dealer told me it was a broken reverse synchro. I think they meant idler, since there is no synchro for reverse. It was covered under warranty. The total cost of the repair was just over 2k.

It should still be covered under warranty. You might as well have them take a look at your 3rd gear synchros too. My dealership kept telling me they couldn't recreated so I just left the car with them for a couple of days, and my problems with the 3rd gear usually happened when the car was cold (or what I noticed anyways). If they find that then they can just fix both issues. They gotta open up the tranny anyways.

yepp...Thats what I usually do too at a stop light. I would put in 3rd (when I had the 3rd gear issue and would pop out sometimes) then 1st and drive off..When I shift into 3rd it would go in smoothly instead of it crunchin its way in.

Everytime you put it in reverse, you should shift into third then in reverse. It will go in smoother. Also u should changed out your tranny fluid to the GM friction modified fluid if you havent done so. It will help alot.
Gotta make the tranny last!

I am almost certain that our manual reverse is synchronized.. not positive, but almost certain. A number of manufacturers have been building their transmissions with a reverse gear synchronizer to eliminate the grinding people experience because they do not shift into a forward gear first before going into reverse (this is the reason I alluded to above for doing this).

I'm going to look into this a little more to see what I can find.

You are doing things correctly by doing this (the bolded sentence). By starting (or completing) a shift into, say, third gear before going into first, you will reduce the wear on your first gear synchronizers quite a bit. A simple thing that costs nothing, but returns a lot in the way of longevity.

I was bored the other day and flipped through some old Acura service bulletins and discovered that "skip shifting" in the TL (going from say 2nd gear to 4th gear) is bad for the synchros since they don't have a chance to correctly match the speed of the gear you are skipping to. I know there are some lazy shifters out there and to be totally honest, I've done it twice in the year I've had mine. Not anymore for me.

I wonder how GM engineered the old Camaros with the skip shift. They made it so that if you were not gong a certain speed, the tranny would make you shift from 1st to 4th to save gas. Oh well, good thing I don't own a old Camaro.

Absolutely true. Unless you wait for the speed of the layshaft to come down enough for the shift.

I would bet that GM had built into their software a wait state to allow for this difference, but that's just a guess.

Im confused on the putting it in 3rd gear thing then putting it in reverse.. As far as i was concerned, i tryed a bunch of things and nothing got it to actually move in reverse at all.. as soon as i left off the clutch it would grind.

The dealership called me on Saturday about 2 hours after i dropped it off and said that the fluid was BLACK when they took it out and said they replaced it with no fix.. They also said it might not be covered under warranty... I was a little agitated to hear that but they called this morning saying that they were gunna open it up to see whats wrong.

My brother said its probably the idler gear for reverse.. Hopefully they call me in the am with more details and ill let you guys know the deal...

Actually the corvettes still have that feature, if you shift under a certain rpm it electronically blocks 2nd and 3rd.

I guess their trannys are build differently. That is why I thought it was ok to do it in mine. Now I know.
