'04 TL - Key Cut Code
Hey guys, need a little help.
I want to get a 2nd key for 2004 TL. I'm in Canada, but my car is the US model. I called up the local dealership and they tell me I need to call a US dealership to get like a 5 digit code so they can cut me a key that will work in the ignition (is that true?). They also said that the US dealership probably won't give me the info over the phone for security reasons (can't prove I'm the owner of the car and I am who I say I am).
Is it the VAC number ? 12345-1234?
What are my options? I'm not too familiar with these "smart" keys.
Any input would be greatly appreciated.

When the original buyer got the car, it came with a little hang tag with 4 digits for the key code as well as 2 remote fobs, 2 regular keys and a valet key which does not open the glove box or armrest compartment locks.
The 4 digits were unrelated to the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN).
You may need to give the VIN to a dealership, along with ownership info, before it will give you the digital key code, radio code or Navi code.
BTW, it's my understanding that a dealer normally can cut a key and program the chip to work with the car if the dealer has access to a working key; it doesn't need the key code.
A key code just makes things much easier for everyone if the owner has it; then the dealer doesn't even need another working key.
