'04 TL 5spd AT shift issue

'04 TL 5spd AT shift issue

So... my car scared the shit out of me last week. I have the 5spd AT.

I was heading into work this morning about 5:30am going north on Hwy 77 from eagan... This FUCKER gets on 77 north from 494 in his fuking tercel and decides to get in front of me. Im going 70mph still and he has about 2 car lengths of space between me and him and merges in front of me. I hit the brakes hoping not to hit any ice.

I put the gas to the floor and go around him. I get in front of him and let off the gas pedal real quick... all of a sudden my car is stuck in second gear and wont shift. I look down to see if maybe i hit the stick over to Manual but it was still in drive. I push the stick over to manual and try to shift up to 3rd but it wont shift. Im on the HWY still revving at 6000RPM in 2nd gear and it wont shift out of 2nd. I let the car slow down to 2000RPM and it still wont shift. I got off the HWY by the airport still trying everything i could to shift out of 2nd and nothing. When i get to the top of the off ramp i lightly tapped the brakes and the car shifted out of 2nd and has been running fine since.


anyone have any idea WTF might have happened?

did the [D5] light blink? any other warning lights?

might be time for a new trans........

No lights came on that I noticed.

I have been reading this forum since 2006. During that time, I have seen approx 3 or 4 people post this exact same thing.

It is a freakish event (with extremely low probability of happening) that is known to occur with our car.

My WAG: transmission pressure switch failed to reset on that one instance, for whatever reason.
Has the problem recurred?
Does everything work fine (including switch to VTEC above 4800 RPM) now?
How many miles on the car and on the trans fluid (i.e. when was it last changed and how was it changed -- 1 x 3, 3 x 3, machine flush )?

same thing happened to my about 40k miles ago.

i wouldn't worry about it. i haven't had any trans problems since then.

It hasnt happened since but im also afraid to kick it down again for fear of dropping my tranny on the highway...lol. Everything has been working fine before and after. I have just about 80,200 miles on it. Not sure about the trans fluid, bought it used. I had an oil change last month but thats about it for recent stuff.

Thanks for the link... seems like its a common thing in winter. The traction control explanation makes sense, when i thought about it afterwards it did seem like the computer freaked out and didnt know what the fuck was going on so it stayed in 2nd. When i bought the car i got a 3yr 36,000 mile warranty so if anything fucks up hopefully it does it in that time frame.
