'04 Rear Brake Calipers

Just replaced the brakes on two 04 TLs (one was mine). On both cars the left rear caliper had problems. On the 1st, the caliper piston would not compress as they normally do. It felt like it was stuck in a “brakes on” position. On the 2nd car the left rear caliper was covered with rust but it compressed normally.

Has anyone else had or seen problems like this? After 11 years with mine I’ve always thought the brakes were some of the best out there. Now I’m beginning to wonder.

Brake fluid is rarely changed on time on most cars. Brake fluid absorbs water which is should NOT contain. BMW recommends changing the fluid every 24 months. Honda/Acura suggest every 2-3 years. Many folks on here and driving around have fluid that's 4+ years old easily. As the fluid ages, it absorbs more water and starts rusting the brake components from the inside out. That's what causes stuck calipers and rust.

if you drive the car during winter snow its common for you to rebuilt/relube the caliper once every summer. The fluid help but salt/de-ice solution will corrode it much quicker.

I had the same problem with the left rear caliper a year ago. The piston got stuck in the grab position waring out the pads taking the rotor along with it.

After 11 years, you have to expect things to happen to any car. Just because it's an Acura doesn't automatically mean they won't.
