$658 to Fix Pink Headlight.

Friend of Mine's wife has an 06 woth 11k on the clock- took her car into the stealership to fix a pink headlight and was presented with a $658 estimate to replace one bulb, one igniter and one control unit....

I told him to get 2 bulbs from a vendor here and be done with it... Am I talking out of my arse, or am I spot on?

you are spot on. pink headlights are a result for a bad bulb, not bad ballast

Yep. Just the bulb. They're charging you for their lack of diagnostic skills, replacing unnecessary parts at your expense.

$40 for morimoto which are great bulbs or if you want to go all out get the osram cbi or osram svs bulbs for $195. Expensive, but if you were going to spend $600+ anyways, doesn't $195 sound like a bargain?

Thanks for the replies guys... Putting my bride in a 4runner (the TL isn't optimal for hauling around our 3 year old, so I'm gonna keep the old TL for a DD and put the big diesel in the garage. I'm looking to do some mods cause I can't leave anything alone for any length of time.

If the dealer did that to me, I'd make it my mission to make the Acura district service manager aware, cuz somebody needs their arse chewed out for that.

Why would the District Manager chew anyone out if they are trying to make more money for a business the district manager is running?

I agree. I'm sure that the sales people aren't encouraged to recommend needless repairs.

This really does suck--I guess most of the dealerships are so profit driven that they'll do anything to anyone for a buck. What a heck of a way to live your life.

Service departments are where the dealers make their $$. If the OP hadn't advised his friend, the car might have been repaired at $658. Not everyone is mechanically inclined or has access to friends that are. Cars have become more and more complicated (or appear to be) to some folks and simply feel more comfortable with the dealer.
I'm not condoning the dealership raking folks over the coals but it's business.
