Tech's progress thread

After years of lurking here, the opportunity came and I was finally able to pick up a Type-S a couple of weeks ago and I couldn't be happier.

I washed it yesterday but didn't my camera on me and it's cold as balls outside today but I'll try to get better pics tomorrow

There's a laundry list of things I want to do but I think I'm going to start with cosmetics since I'm in the middle of buying a home and the budget is tight.
  1. Chips in paint: fix with balloon white dip (not a permanent fix)
  2. Tints
  3. Gap in the aspec front bumper and side skirts
  4. Seat leathers (thinking the BMW-esque burnt orange, too much?)
  5. Adding a front lip splitter/side skirt extensions/getting a rear diffuser fabbed
  6. Rear window visor spoiler

That is my plan for phase one which I should have done by June/July (Next January if it were up to my wife)

Anyway, I'm glad to be here. Four years later and I still learn something from yall everyday.

Welcome-officially!

Congrats on your Type S. Your mod list looks good. I don't think #4 would be good though. Everything else looks good.

Hmm. I've never really been a fan of red/orange interior...

But when you said "burnt orange" my mind went to a deep chestnut brownish. I wonder how that would look.

I'd like to see what you come up with if you go that direction.

Welcome, and happy modding!

I have a black interior so I was thinking of a nice contrast inside. The seats against the black interior. Maybe it sounds better in my head but this is what I was thinking

without the color matching in the cabin, though

I like the deep color of the dash/center area actually. That's closer to what I was thinking.

I think it could work...

and there you are...
you sure that paint needs a dip? The car will have some imperfections, it's used...a good cleaning and waxing can make it look great from 10 feet which is the level of perfection you should shoot for with a daily to keep your OCD in check.

And now I'm replying to you in two different threads but I'll say it here for records sake lol. It doesn't necessarily need a dip but I want to fix the chips (out of sight out of mind) and I like the idea of being able to change the color of my car on a whim.

That's definitely true but if you're a BIG TIME perfectionist, you will still see the chips with the dip!

I can't lie, the color of my car is the ONLY thing I'd change about mine. OH, and maybe make it a type s.

Damnit really?? ....shit...well the gun is already ordered so I guess I'll just have to test it to see how noticeable they are.

I thought it was supposed to self level over minor stuff..

Impulsive spender here, therefore no foresight...ah well

Worse comes to worst, I'll deal with the minor imperfections it leaves. There are a few tiny dents I have to pop. I might just leave them and see if they level over that as well

Found a nice quiet spot to get some pics of the car. I will try to get the window visors on tomorrow.

Got the visors on today and I gotta say it gives the car a nice facelift.

Also spent 3 hours removing old 3M tape to fix the gaps in the front lip only to get to the end and realize the 3M tape I was going to use wasn't strong enough

This is where it started. This was 3M tape from hell AND the person who did this before me double taped double sided tape so there was two lines of tape on the inside of the lip as well
Tech's progress thread-byr8c5e.jpg

"halfway" through.. still had to finish the inside of the lip and I was losing sunlight
Tech's progress thread-vh5h1og.jpg

Three hours and bottles of goo gone, WD-40, and alcohol later
Tech's progress thread-l7khjhd.jpg

If you look closely on the inside of the lip you can see the small area where I can't get the tape up. I'm going to try to find some stronger solvent tomorrow
Tech's progress thread-a26t3ao.jpg

Not looking forward to fixing the other side tomorrow

Can you post detailed pics of the lip fix when you get to it? I'm considering adding the base lip to my type s but it would be helpful to see how you get it to stick better. Also do you have any pics of where it was cut at the fog light slant to make room for the lip to fit on?

Which 3M tape wasn't good enough and which are you going to get? I'm talked to some people and they said they glued on an extra zip tie and did it that way to for that bulging area

Car looks good!

Sure I'll be posting more pictures tomorrow once I get it done. I honestly have no idea what you mean about the cut at the fog light slant, I bought the car with this lip already on there and I'm still learning about the car but I'll be happy to take better pictures for you tomorrow.

The tape I got was the 3M auto tape from Advanced Auto Parts. It was this but the wider one, like the strips on the car.

When I looked at the back it described it as "minor fixes, fixing dents." It just didn't feel sticky enough to hold it and I don't want to use it, it fail and then I have to do this all over again.. I'm going to go to Lowes/Home Depot to see if they have a stronger version of it.

Can you explain the zip tie fix a little more?

Welp..I was defeated by the gap. For some reason, it would not hold at that gap. I tried 3 different times and it seperated every single time and I was too nervous to try the caulk route SO imma just see if the body shop can fix it better than me. Sorry I couldn't give you a better update.

I hope you're applying the tape in a really warm place in addition to a heat gun/hairdryer. If not, that would be a problem why it's not holding well

This 3M stuff doesn't stick at all in the cold - I use it to hold up some rocker switches in the inside of my car and if applied in the cold, it would not hold up my rocker switches which weigh next to nothing.

I was in the garage so not warm but not as cold as outside and I had a heat gun and space heater ..idk though..I used it on one of the spots and it did what I wanted it to do but it just won't close that gap. You wanna know the crazy part? After it was all said and done it left the gap in the SAME SPOT

check out the first pic in this thread regarding the cut at the fog light slant, can you take a similar pic to see what yours looks like?

https://acurazine.com/forums/third-g...type-s-858730/

some people i talked to said there are zip ties to get the aspec kit installed. they said get some extra ones and glue a female end to the bumper and then zip tie it super tight. i've never seen these zip ties so i can't really explain it any more than that.

sorry to hear the gap is still there, i'm interested to see what a shop does to make it work. please keep me updated! i'm close to pulling the trigger on an aspec kit with a base lip!

Don't know how I missed this post. I was gonna hold off on talking to the shop but I'll swing by there today and ask them what they can do about it and post an update tonight on what they say.
