basically, i could spent a couple hundred dollars for one + lenses
right now, i can get a brand new Rebel 300D body (6.3mp) with the 18-55mm lense, for $200.... i know its the old one, and they are up to XTi (10.1)
but $200, good deal right?? i would still need to buy the 75-300mm lense, a tripod and abattery charger.. this camera is brand new, but the charger was missing... been left around at my job for like a year and a half, and its clearance to $200... tempting

By the way Allon, Nikon D80 plus VR 18-200mm equals straight up sex bro!

and yeah, just like the NBP/WDP war, there's also a Nikon/Canon one...though a slight difference between the two, Nikon > Canon...but to add something about each: i think (some of) Canon's lenses outperform Nikon's, but Nikon makes a better camera overall with some top-notch lenses...

if you guys want to see really nice DSLR photos you should check out all the Acurazine photo contests hidden away in the Camera & photography sub-section of Ramblings. There's also lots of threads of various equipment. Here's a link.

You know, all of these posts are great, but the end result is really independent of the brand, model or resolution of the camera.
What makes a photo is the eye behind the eye piece.
I'm a Canon whore myself but you can generate most of these photos with a point and shoot camera.
If were me, I would always go for the latest model. There are always technical advancements that make the newer models better than the old.
The other aspect of photography especially with DSLR's is that the lenses are the key (as korrupted pointed out). Bodies come and go and degrade in price very quickly. Lenses either hold their value or sometimes gain value. I've got a white lens that cost me 3400.00 5 years ago and it's selling for 3800.00 today.

For beginner DSLR, it the body doesn't make a large a difference as your lens will. I'd recommend either a XT, XTi or even picking up a used 20D or 30D depending on your price range and what your goals are with it. I have upgraded from my XT to a 40D but here is a picture taken with my XT and a 24-70 L series lens which cost more than my 40D body.
The reason I chose this picture to share was because its untouched.
