First TL, First Thread, First Mod

picked up an 07 TL-S M/T recently, and started reading the hell out of this site- great info guys.

First, here's the pics of the new wheels. No exterior mods yet, minus a 35% tint and a debadging job:

For my first mod, I started with function: I didn't have a secure place to stow my conceal carry piece when I was driving. I wanted a solution that would allow me to stow and remove the piece w/o unholstering it, or transfering holsters.

Anyways, for you freedom-loving patriots out there, here's what I came up with (I think this is an original idea, you tell me)

A section of balck leather belt, w/ 4 black nylon rivets, mounted on the driver's seat (picture taken from under the steering column)

The stow holding my Kahr PM-9 (i left enough slack in the leather to hold a Glock 23 as well- my preffered winter conceal carry piece, see below)

Above and Below (car door open vs. closed & window up): if I have to leave the gun in the car, this is how it looks from the outside (I'll have to keep a piece of black cloth over the gun, if I'm forced to leave the gun behind). I couldn't mount the stow any lower, w/o interfering with the seat's operation.

I hadn't seen anything like this on the site yet, maybe it'll help someone. Thanks again for all the great info on the entire forum-

Patrick

Well considering I saw a pic on here of someone who had an AR-15 mount on his trunk lid this actually seems much more practical...

nice car, dig the mod, though I think it's kind of iffy having an unlocked gun, do you have to put in and lock the glove box everytime you leave the car, cause that's kind of a hassle. Always love the look a MT regardless of the interior of a car.

Wow- I guess not so many from the Southern states huh? After a while, I guess you start taking some things like carrying for granted...

in response-

- usually the gun stays with me, except where it's not legally allowed. then I simply leave it in the car, out of sight (but loaded still, that's no issue).

- and hell yeah, always let the cops know. they're damn close to 100% supportive around here, until you forget to mention it. I know a few folks who have had their guns confiscated and destroyed because of it- life is expensive enough with guns and TL's, no need to add to the cost.....

congrats on the car, looks great and welcome to the forums.

other than the cool factor of the mod, why not just leave it in its holster and put it in the glovebox?

I stowed the gun between the drivers seat and console on previous cars, but there's not enough room in that gap on the TL (not w/o scratching the hell out of the console, at least).

As for the glove box, I want to maintain access to the weapon while driving (more importantly, at stop lights, etc)- a gun in the glove box does no good in a self-defense situation. It's about immediate access.

No issue with comfort while driving, it clears the space under my legs, I don't know its there unless I reach for it.

Overall, the whole carry issue is just peace of mind. Hope to never be in the situation to use the gun, but if the situation comes up.....

What would you shoot from inside your car? Organizing a TL Safari ? lol just jokin please don't shoot!!

In my opinion it's a little over kill, but I guess for you Americans it's usual stuff.

I don't get why everyone needs a gun... aren't there enough over tempered stressed out people running around in this world? Just my from living in a virtually gun-less city.

Congrats on the car man, it's gorgeous

The first thing that I have always done to my cars is tint it. You don't realize how much heat it keeps out until you get in a car with no tint.

As for the whole gun thing, if you have it just incase something goes down, for a sense of protection, more power to ya. My household doesn't have any guns and I don't plan on owning one in the near future, but you never know.

What on earth could possibly happen to you that you need to carry a gun between your legs in your car. I'm in no way against guns just dont see the reason to carry while your driving or atleast to have it within quick reach.

Alright, took some time to get back to this thread, crazy week...sorry, this one's kinda long

RedAggie03 - What state are you from?
I'm in NC

h2point2 - this is a good mod i never thought of something like that good idea. i might do this soon, but my taurus pt145 fits perfect in the top arm rest with extra clip. maybe i will do this for winter when i carry the taurus 40 pt 100. anyhow enough with guns the car looks good!

PhillyxMartin - Nice but I don't think its even necessary I keep my gun on the side of the door it's easy for me to reach.
Good to hear a few members carry (not for the sake of carrying, just that some folks might have gotten something out of this mod idea).

I tried both the door and the center console prior to this install, but wasn't happy with the ergonomics/access. Personal preference though, as it always is w/ guns. Power to you if it works!

Steven Bell - Just reach between your legs and you've got it! By the way, be sure to join our Silver TL Social Group at:

Thanks for the invite brother, I'll definitely check it out!

VmtSquad - What would you shoot from inside your car? Organizing a TL Safari ? lol just jokin please don't shoot!!
That is pretty funny!

tc_terencec - I don't get why everyone needs a gun... aren't there enough over tempered stressed out people running around in this world? Just my from living in a virtually gun-less city.
Sounds like a great place to live and raise a fam. I agree w/ you: Over-tempered/stressed/un-trained/not-legally able people should NEVER carry.

And if anyone feels that there will never be a situation in which they'd have to defend their life, or the lives of their loved ones, than carrying just isn't worth the expense or inconvenience.

CLtotheTL32 - Congrats on the car man, it's gorgeous

The first thing that I have always done to my cars is tint it. You don't realize how much heat it keeps out until you get in a car with no tint.

Thanks man. As for the tint- this is my first sedan with dark leather- it's amazing the difference that the tint made! SO worth it, and I think it looks pretty sweet too (hopefully the first of many mods....)

SCS15 - What on earth could possibly happen to you that you need to carry a gun between your legs in your car. I'm in no way against guns just dont see the reason to carry while your driving or atleast to have it within quick reach.
Off the top of my head... car-jacking, mugging, etc. A shit-head tried to mug/car-jack me a few years ago (in a Wal-Mart parking lot, at 6PM...ridiculous, I know)... and that was in my 98 F-150 - not exactly a VIP ride.

What got me out of that one was either the 35% tint on my truck window (it was dusk), or him seeing me reach into the center console while approaching from the outside of the driver's door. Not sure which it was, but his gun never left his belt: He just hesitated and ran away. I'm just not willing to rely on the incompetance/sack-less-ness of thugs to save my ass in the future.

Alright, to wrap this up: if someone wants to risk their life and criminal record to steal my car (or anything else of material value) they can have it. BUT...if I think they're unstable, and I feel that I/my family won't make it out of the situation intact, I'm going to affect the situation any way I can.

I prefer to think of it as being a realist, or just being prepared for the unthinkable (but I'm sure some members have other nouns/adjectives! ).

Later guys-

Patrick

Not encouraging gun toting, but I must say, that is a clean job on the gun strap. I like it.

What other mods do you have in mind?

Yea man. The darker your interior, the darker the tint looks. I had an all black interior on my 01 CL-S and 35% all around, and it looked way darker. Now my 04 TL has 35% all around as well, but I have tan leather, so it looks like bitch tint

But it's so nice when it's hot as balls outside. I can't stand getting in my girlfriends tintless car when it's that hot.

With a carry conceal license in TX you have to be really careful. If the gun is visible in any way while in the car you can be arrested. Check you state laws.. (I'm sure you did).. That's the perfect spot though.. under the seat is where I would holster it..

Thanks, I'm happy w/ how it turned out.

I thinking about under the hood next: AEM V2, UR pulley (still considering underdrive vs. pulley, as I've read about here on AZ- still need to do more research), and a P2R throttle body spacer. Don't know the timeline on the upgrades yet, still need to sell this to the wife!

jmkiang - Sick gat!

Nice car too
appreciate it bro, I'm hoping to upgrade the car for years to come!

I agree. My old F-150 had tan leather, and the 35% tint didn't do it justice. I'm much happier w/ the same tint on the TL-S.

Good to know. NC has reciprocity w/ TX, in case I'm ever driving thru.

NC's somewhat different: even without a conceal permit, anyone can carry, fully loaded, as long as the weapon is in plain view (on dash, passenger seat, etc). Not something I'd recommend though, I can imagine some soccer moms wigging out! (and I prefer not to advertise, not sure why anyone would)

I'd rather have one and never use it vs not having one when you need it.

Also, if the cop doesnt ask you dont tell !
I've been stopped in miami numerous times. I had a bag of bullets I just bought from Walmart spill out on my back seat. Cop never asked me. Plus, I think when they pull up your license info it'll tell them you have a CCW permit.
