Hey guys I finally jumped on a TL S about 2 weeks ago and a couple of days
I picked up a 2007 Acura TL Type S, ASM - Gray/Black interior, 79,500 Miles from a great guy in Paterson NJ.
I picked it up for 12.8k, 2 owner history first was a lease, car was bought by previous owner as a CPO from DCH Acura in NJ.
I absolutely love the car and I'm glad to be part of the community (completely now lol)... Here are the pics. Click on them to enlarge, specially the unhappy ones
And here is something that must have happened last night.. I noticed it this morning.... :|
It must have happened before I got home from my parents in uptown Manhattan because I left at night and didn't notice it... I think it might have been one of my neighbors because the spot was tight... Unbelievable.
I need opinions on this, this is my second car ever... First was a 2001 mitsubishi galant, I plan on garaging my TLs within a few days, should I wait until spring to repair that damage? The previous owner told me he repainted the bumpers, the paint seems to have popped off because of those hits it seems.. How should I go about redoing that area, anyone has estimates for some quality work? Thanks a ton guys.
You'll likely need a new bumper and have it entirely repainted. Word of advice, don't skimp on the body shop. When it comes to painting, you get what you pay for- the last thing you want is to have a poor paint match, as it sticks out like a sore thumb. TLs, by nature, have a noticeable difference between the bumper and body paint, simply due to plastic vs metal being painted, however, you don't want it accent it even more.
Also, paint adherence is key too. You don't want to get rock chips (inevitable) and then have your paint start flaking off in a nasty way. It all comes down to the prep done on the bumper, etc, etc.
I myself would probably leave the damage until the spring. Who knows what will happen over the winter- another jackass driver, sliding into something, rock chips from gravel, etc. at least if it's done in the spring, you can enjoy the perfectness for the summer and fall
Good luck and welcome to the boards!
Edit: ask a body shop what they recommend to do about your bumper. Don't go in there saying "I want this", but rather, ask what it will take to get your car looking new again. Get a bunch of written quotes. See what is included. Check shop reviews and reputation. Don't base your repair on price alone!
My to do list consists of aligning the sideskirts that are a little off and take care of any paint issues by spring, also the headlight plastic need to be restored because they are cloudy/dirty/etc, that bumper getting tapped like that was just a wakeup call to get my **** off the street. It has been barely 2 weeks ffs lol...
Btw the bumper is not cracked or anything, the car doesn't have any dents, the paint just peeled off because of whatever sort of hit that was on that right area. Does it look like it got pushed/backed into at slow speed to you guys with experience? I'm pretty sad right now lol... Hell even near the bottom left area of the front left headlight the paint is peeled a little because of possible flexing of the front bumper cover.
This is what I get for leaving enough space for someone to park, Sheesh lol.. I need to make sure to cover ground so this never happens when I have to leave it on the street.. even temporarily.
Yes ^^ idk if u notices but ur type s lip spoiler is missing. Congrats on the car though, thats a steal of a price and I love how the silver shows the lines of the type s so well.
It didn't have it when I bought it. Maybe they stole it from him, some of those pics are from me seeing it the first time in Paterson. Do TLS's always come with that spoiler?
The damage seems to be purely just the paint job, it looks worse than seeing it in person tbh.. So you guys are saying to buy a new bumper?
Thanks for the help.
Also guys what options do I have for a bumper? Polyurethane/Fiber, oem? Which one would be best for better paint durability etc? Lowdown?
I'm not 100% sure the Type-S decklid is held on by bolts by factory, but they provide bolts when you buy the spoiler from the dealer, so I'm just assuming thats how it comes out from factory, too.
I know the TL factory wings have holes for sure, though.
Are we certain that all type s TLs come with that lid spoiler, I've seen some without it.
edit - I checked all doors/bonnet/windshield etching, I could have sworn I saw it in the trunk but I probably didn't since if it's there it would be under the liner.
I was going to pass on it before I saw it in person, CL pics made it look worse, then I saw it listed on eBay with better pics and noted that he said he had brand new tires on it, was able to tell from the pics too finally.
I assumed they were all worn from the CL pics, then at $12,800, 79k miles I had to do it. Overall the car is in very good condition in and out, pretty classy looking. Not sure what happened with the trunk lip. When I didn't see it there I thought to myself "good I'm not going to get mine jacked" if it had come with it lol
wdp was my first choice but this was easily my secondary and in fact I'm pretty happy how the front chrome goes with silver also the side mirrors with the lights look better with this color imo, it's delicious.
Yeah man congrats and nice color.
All TLS come with factory lip on the trunk. I think someone
just stole his and its a very common thing.
You should get one in the Future.
Here are some better pics of the bumper, it isn't damaged/cracked, the paint peeled off heading north on the Henry Hudson the morning I found it lol. Click pics for bigger size.
The discoloration in the missing paint area was my father putting his greasy finger there after eating some popcorn. When you pass your fingers over those lines you can't feel them. In one of the shots you can't even see them because of the angle... Weird.
So what do you think g's? Paint the area (and near the front left headlight) or new bumper/paint. I really hope color is matched if the first option is the case.
Thanks bro, I guess this will be my homework until spring gives me good time.
One of the drivers at work told me to take it where they take work vehicles to get them repaired/maintained, says service is excellent. I'll start from there I guess.
Regardless of condition of bumper though, it might be more cost effective to get a new bumper + paint then just fixing this bumper considering the prep involved that it would take with this bumper right? Sorry the questions I just want the best advice and don't want some painter luring me into some temporary fix with a nice sounding quote.. I want this thing looking factory fresh and with the best possible protective/durable methods implemented into the paintjob.
I don't have any experience with real vehicle ownership I take your advice seriously lol
