Exclamation Body work on '04 TL complete...pics & new issue

Hey guys,

Fresh shots of the completed body work.

Going in, I think I had unrealistic expectations on how it would turn out. I did not get any "wow" effect when I saw the completed job for the first time.

Overall, I am OK with it. There micro issues that I found but I can overlook those. I took the best shots I could at the moment so I hope you folks well tuned on paint jobs will have a good idea on what it's all about and share what you think of the work.

On another sad note, I just learn the k-frame!?!, is bent (which in turn offsets the wheels alignment), meaning I have to get a replacement. And maybe also have to adjust the frame. I got a quote for a used one around 250-300. Looking like I'll have to drop some more loot on this salvage car. this ish cray....!

The gap between front fender and headlight is ridiculous. How could they call that "complete?!"

Nice Earl Scheib paint job.

That looks f*cking awful, man. The orange peel can be wetsanded, but the sags/chips/gaps have GOT to be fixed.

I never really knew what to expect, but I'll get taking every single pointer back to get it corrected.

Though this was my first encounter with something like this, I defly had a got feeling it didn't look right.

Yeah...the orange peel effect you see is poor workmanship, it's a combination of improper atomization of the paint and going just too damn fast, which is further substantiated by the other flaws.

Either they are going to have to repaint it (unlikely), OR they should wetsand it.

From this point forward, DOCUMENT EVERYTHING. Trust me on this one:/

Holy crap that's horrible. Trunk lines don't match up, fender to the hood, fender to the head light, I hope you didn't pay more than 500 for that

that's pretty bad.

problem here is you didn't have any expectations, so the shop isn't really gonna care that much (it's not right, but it happens).

teh fuch did they do?

make notes: fenders dont align with headlights, runs in paint, extreme orange peel, didnt remove tail lights (they have sand marks on the edges), looks like they sprayed your exhaust tips too

Looks like you were warned of the "budget" process thay were using when prepping your car. Hope you are able to get this fixed

If I owned a body shop, I'd never let a customer's vehicle leave looking like that.

Hopefully the shop can sort all of that out for you, OP.

+1 on orange peel like bitch dude. That sucks.

Remind me to spend no less than like $3k on a paint job if the time ever comes.

Edit: Make that $4-5k

Truth. I forgot about those pics from the other thread. But even so, you'd think someone would look the car over before telling the owner it's ready

That looks pretty bad. But, not uncommon for quicky Maaco, budget type shops.

I wouldn't trust them to touch the car any further. The fact is the current condition is far below industry standards and way beyond acceptable imperfections.

I highly doubt they put enough clear on to allow wetsanding. Not that they care or even have a mil gauge, but there should be 2 mils minimum of clear for UV protection, after any wetsanding, polishing, etc. If they wetsand, it will most likely reduce the durability against the elements, etc.

Orange peel is normal, but that is way excessive / rough on the quarter.

What a time waste of time, money, and air. Seriously? WHY even do that to the damn car? You may as well roll the bitch into traffic and let it get totaled again...seriously that's a shame to do to a TL...just chalk it up as a loss, save your damn money and buy a LEGIT car, I'm seeing people say you paid 2400 for this!? YOU COULD HAVE PUT THAT DOWN ON A 08 CERTIFIED TL! I mean...all I can do is SMH, SMDHRN...*face palm*

even demanding a redo probably wont produce a satisfactory job...best bet might be to demand a partial refund and take your business elsewhere.

I got him to take it back and he painted over the spots I highlighted with a wax pen, so now it has yellow spots

Said fk it, now I'm in the TL

But did it get was over time?

That would be my main issue, is this going to look even less appealing around the corner.

I think he's worried it's going to look worse over time.

Frankly it looks pretty bad right now, so there shouldn't be a later.

Oh...

Idk, the paint still looks like shit, he did horrible prepping and used 1 old can of paint. It's so thin it's stupid. Probably has 1 clear coat too.

You gotta do something about it man, it's a shame to see a TL like that. You have a luxury car with a spray paint job.

At least it looks like someone got a happy ending after $2300 changed hands.

I've got it back to the shop; at least for some of the gaps to be taken care of.
He's trying tell about his BS 20+ years painting experience, saying the orange peel stuff is just bollocks.

And also that I can't expect it to look like its coming out of the factory.

^^bullshit!

i've seen body work as many of us have...your paint...

yes to a degree there is a little bit of orange peel from factory, BUT not THAT bad!!

i've had the "coming from factory" line used with me...which is a crock of shit, how do you think show cars look as good as they do??? great painter, good prep, pride and care in the work they are doing.

the body shop i've gone to knows upfront what my expectations are and go to great measures to knock my socks off and take care of my car while it is in their care. i would definitiely be upset/pissed/annoyed with the workmanship performed on your car. have you talked to a manager or the owner??

Their job as repairmen is supposed to make the car as it was before the accident. The line about not expecting it to come out factory is BS because that's exactly what you should expect. And his comments about 20 years of paintwork don't make the orange peel any better.

In fact, I would be concerned about how many shoddy repairs that have been done over 20 years, but don't say that.

For $2300...that is an acceptable level of orange peel. Sags, no. Orange peel? Yes.

Look, I don't know where OP lives (I didn't even look, TBH), but RnR 'Factory Finish' jobs are without approach under the $4k mark, WITHOUT body work involved to boot...and in this neck of the woods, and there's a plethora of shops to choose from, so it's simply not a matter of demand vs price.

The orange peel is teh fail, for sure, but for $2300 WITH body work, I think he got a decent deal. Going to need a wetsand....
