Are we faster?

So last night, oddly enough, a friend and I decided to play around (closed "track"). I'm surprised I beat him...stock 350Z (2006) vs. my car, which performance wise only has comptech exhaust and fujita cai. Is he just a bad driver?

Hmmm, I am sort of surpised there. Those 350Z's are a bit lighter and put the power to the rear (which we all know we lack with our front wheel drive experience). My roommate has a 350Z and I am pretty sure that we would take my TL with exhaust and AEM intake... I think your buddy just doesn't know how to hit those gears right. Don't get me wrong though, my car has surpised me a few times against some other rides...and I haven't actually went up against another 350Z at full pedal before, so I could be wrong. In that case, that would be awesome!

I ran a 350 z on the highway It looked stock and i had him by a 1 car and was pulling on him. He started 1st too because i heard his car downshift so I don't think it is not possible. Plus 350z are not that light they are acutually one of the heavier coupes on the market.

+1 on the comment about the Z's weight ... unless they go through some serious race-spec weight reduction, they have quite a large load to carry ...

ahhh make your final replies before this thread is handled by the moderators!!!

I've raced several of them on the highway and roll. I have even test drove one with an aftermarket exhaust. They are not all that! They may look good and handle well, but they are not faster than the 04 and up TL.

my brother in-law had an 03 track model z, the 03 track model is THE lightest of all the 350Z's. Around 3,300 lbs, they are now around 3,600lbs, conv- forget it!! I don't know about the other years and models, but this one would whoop our TLs no competition...

Why would this get locked? I don't understand why...

Because this thread has next to nothing to do with performance modifications and is better suited for the "Car Talk" board.

Amen brother!! My dad has a 350z 06 manual and he has me by 3 cars by the time I am going into 3rd...on the highway I stay with him better but he still takes me. Auto vs. Auto the Z will still take you off the line

having personally owned and tuned a 350Z, basically there's a few things you need to understand..

1) yes the Z is actually a pretty hefty car...so in that area, it's only main advantage is its rear wheel drive function

2) on a stop and go situation, the VQ35DE will always kick ass simply because of the mechanics of the engine.

2a) on a rolling start scenario, TL's may seem to get a jump ie. 1 car length sometimes more, because rolling means we are already going more or less the same speed, and beyond that, we get Vtec to kick in....

* don't forget the TL's are still considered Family Luxery Sport Sedans.
* the Z is straight up sport, ~ regarding handing on really curvy areas ....the TL will probably do better in a stock Touring Z vs a Stock A-spec

statistically Z's should beat us ~ with the exception of rolling starts because i know that when Vtec's kick in, Z's need a bit of time to compensate..

....in another light, most people i know that own Z's honestly aren't that good drivers....i swear it's like a curse ~ i personally know 8 G35 owners in my school and 4 Z owners....you'd think that they picked such cars from the legendary prowess of the VQ series engines, but then one almost hits you, and you just can't help but sit there in our NICER driver's seat/interior, and shake your head.

This isn't just with Z's.lol. Most people I run into with badass cars take off from lights slowers than geo prizms. I dont get it Im like move your ass down the road or move to the far right lane. I hate pulling up behind them thinking they might have a litte lead in their foot and their the slowest on the pavement...anyways..had to get that off my chest
I had a similar experience before intake (stock) with a G35. From a stop they get you first gear but then they are done after that. You can draft them for a gear and then pull.
This is with a 5AT in SS.

Bad Driver IMO. 350Z has better weight/HP ratio along with MT. VQ is a great engine.

haha before this thread gets locked

1) ROFLMAO @ G37 ( it's a good looking car, but i think it's stupid when you start adding numbers ie. my step dad's car SL65? wtf...SL55 sounded so much cooler)

2) /agree VQ is probably still my favorite engine aside from the JZA series but that's old school

3) haha (lol @ "move your ass to the far right lane" i totally know what you mean)

anyway when is this thread gonna get locked? LOL

Yeah, well, 350Z's are great cars and we can all go back and forth on which is better but we aren't comparing apples to apples on the 2. I have an idea, lets compare a Corvette sports car to a BMW 7 series sedan!!! We have luxuary sedan and this is a sports car that is race inspired...we are talking about the company that produced amazing cars like the Silvia and Skyline...Acura's are nice, but lets compare comparable models. That is all I am saying...

how bout this

Hey guys, I actually own both cars being debated here.

I have a 2005 350z 6sp (enthusiast SS and bone stock minus my system) and a 2007 TL 5sp (WDP - actually, I bought it for my wife). The Z is faster, much faster. I can take the TL anyday and i have a big heavy system in the rear of my Z, and i'm not a light guy either.

The Z pulls well in all gears. The TL you have to really push the pedal to get it moving.

That said, two different classes of cars. You're comparing Oranges to Apples. I love my TL and plan on having it a long long time but I bought it for its combination of comfort, looks, and power. The Z, I just bought that cause i've always loved Z's and its pretty fast stock. Not for comfort.

www.amayanet.com - sorry, i don't have pics of the TL up yet, but soon. Just need to detail it first (darn weather).

A friend had a bone stock, automatic trans 350z and
we had a chance to race quite frequently. My 6MT
Accord has Comptech cat-back sans 3rd cat and
resonator, UR pulley, solid metal shift cable bushings,
pro-cats, light wheels and VAFC-II. If he kept it
in D I'd consistently have him by a 3 car lengths
up to 110 or so but if he sport shifted it was a closer,
but still in my favor.

On the other hand, I had a z practically suck my
headlights out on my own turf going up the hill on
H-2 before Tony Honda. He ran away and hid.
I assume his was a 6spd with some goodies.

Not Trying To Start an Argument

I beleive a TL can kill an RX-8, that car is purely about looks only imo. I've heard of people doing turbo kits and all type of crazy engine work and results showed hardly any power increase... In several cases people swapped the engine for the RX-7 engine to get better power...

RX-8 VS Civic Si would be a closer match...

With a 6 spd you would be able to pull a on the RX-8 manual but a 5AT TL will lose remember I am speaking pure stock vs. stock

I was speaking as if you were on the highway in the last post. From a dig all 3rd gens will take a RX-8. The engine does not really create much torque until it hits 3400 rpm. You need to drive one to really understand it is really weird like a turbo lag really bad

1)Doesn't the new G coupe have a bigger engine?
Also, the 65 and 55 are two different engines. They used to (not sure if they still do) sell concurrently.

2) Sounds real good.

3) wtf?!?!?! The past 3 days there's been like 4 people driving around 35 in 45 zones, in the left lane....I'm freakin out

in theory i dont think an rx8 will be able to match the power of the TL and we should be able to take one if we get the apportunity. i was just curious cause everyone was talking about that car at work the other day and i wanted to throw this question to you guys and get some feedback. i will definitely make a clip once my cosuin gets the car and upload them for your enjoyment.

the torque in those are pretty low at least from what i read on the site anyone knows the quater mile on that car??

In a straight line any Tl 5AT or 6MT will dust an RX8, get into some twisties and it is all over, the RX8 is one of the best handling cars on the planet.
