UR Pulley Squeaking?

So got the UR Pulley installed and am loving the extra low end torque. However everytime I accelerate something's squeaking, sounds like a loose belt. Anyone else getting this? Just living with it? Get a slightly smaller belt to tighen it up a bit?

I had the same thing happen when I had the UR pulley on, you must of got the dayco belt. If you get the Gates it wont squeak. Its just the belt, nothing to worry about.

I installed an Unorthodox Racing UD pulley on my previous car (2002 Altima SE) with the Gates belts and it had a nasty habit of squeaking. In order to keep this to a minimum, I frquently (during the first few months of the install) had to adjust, as in tighten, the tension. The Altima had no auto-tensioner like our Acura engines do.

The pulley is made out of aluminum and it's going to squeak.. just the nature of the beast.

just so im on the same page, if i install a pulley i would essesntially be replacing the timing belt too ? or no? also, how hard of a diy is the pulley? i have a great understanding of engines and have done lots of diy's, but never with any belts or pulleys. im mainly worried about taking off the belts, i know i prob dont have the nescisary tools to do this.

The instructions that come with the pulley specify the belt that should go with it. I handed the pulley and the belt to my mechanic, and that was it. I went with the Gates belt that they recommend and have had no squeaking or other issues.

There are threads that go into great detail about installing this mod. It is apparently VERY DIFFICULT to get the stock pulley off, even with the specially needed tools (which most people don't have). All my mods have been DIY except this one. I didn't even want to try it.

Timing belts turn camshafts. Crankshaft pulleys turn accessory belts which operate.. accessories. Our engines use a serpentine accessory belt which is what you will be changing when swapping out a UDP. You are NOT affecting or touching the timing belts.

The hard part with this mod is the fact that the crankshaft pulley bolt takes, as I recall, 180 ft/lbs of torque. That's a heck of a lot of torque and makes the factory unit hard to remove. When I did my 2002 Altima SE pulley, it only required 140 ft/lbs and I used a 2 foot extension on my breaker bar to get it off plus somone to keep me from slidding on the floor as I did this.

I'll have to check on that. Excelerate sent the belt with the pulley but I can't remember if it was Gates or Dayco. Good to know it's not an issue.

Good to know. Thanks again for the shifting FAQ. That and some driving lessons have been the best mods I've done to my car so far.

2096mm instead of 2095mm???

So I double checked the belt I got. It's a Gates 13/16" x 82-1/2" OC; 20mm x 2096mm. The UR install sheet says use 82-1/2"; 2095mm. I'm not sure if the 1 extra mm in the Gates belt I have is causing the squeaking if it's just something you have to live with when you get a pulley.

Hmm...
I had to source my Gates belt on my own. I bought my Pulley from Excelerate as well... Did you pay extra for it?

I got my belt at Napa. Its been quiet as a mouse. No probs whatsoever. Could you have maybe contaminated the pulley with grease when installing that may have transferred to the ribs of the belt at all? Just an idea?

I'll have to check that out. I can only hear it between 1/8 - 1/2 throttle. Thx.

Having it out on the first road trip of the summer, I've isolated the squeaking a bit more. It only happens between 3-4k RMPs in 2nd or 3rd gear at light throttle (around 1/8 throttle). Any more or less throttle and it goes away. Probably the grease like Benz was saying, but weird huh?

So I replaced the old gates belt with a new one to see if it would make a difference and it didn't. It's really not a big deal, just a minor annoyance. Wondering it it's one of the accessory pullies? Does UR make an accessory pulley kit for the 3G TL? Didn't see one listed on thier site.

Wouldn't that cause the belt to slip a little?

I thinks my pulley squaeks too but only at idle. I have an almost new Napa belt which is made by Gates I was told. I want to try the silicone spray I have and see what it does. This is what I'm gonna use http://powersports.honda.com/the_goo...&TheGoodsDir=4

I'm assuming the goal is to put a thin coats on the side walls of the belt and not to get any on the bottom portion of the belt where it's supposed to make contact with the pulley? Is the general idea that it's the sidewalls that are causing the squeaking?

If you apply Pyrol Belt dressing then your squeak will no longer exist.

Tried the belt dressing (Napa belt dressing) and it doesn't seem to be the pulley. BTW, that stuff sure does make a mess and seems to contain some asphalt (a nice black spray). Overspray got on my paint and around the belt in the engine, so be sure you cover your paint with some cloth if you're going to apply this stuff.

So now that the pulley is out of the question, I'm thinking it's the CAI making this noise. Does anyone else get a whistle/squeak from the CAI from 3-4k RPM at light throttle?

I know, just turn the frikin radio up ... it just bugs me.

My Fujita CAI makes a wicked intake vacuum resonance sound at that rpm range. I like it... My bet is you're confusing that sound as belt squeel. Did you do both mods at the same time?

I think you're right. I had the CAI air filter swapped out for an AEM dry flow. Now that I know it's the CAI it's not going to bug me as much. Thx.

Good to see you found the problem.

Mods can you change the title so it reflects the real issue?
