Upgrading Brake Pads

Hey

I wanna upgrade my brake system by getting new rotors and brake pads on my '05 TL A/T. Will that be enough to increase my stopping power without leaving room for something going wrong? I don't have a bunch of excess money to get Brake Kits and stuff so am I in the right direction? What kind of pads and rotors should I get and where?

Thanks

Have a look at peoples signature on their post for popular options
RacingBrake brand from MrHeelToe and Rotora or brembo from Excelerate are popular choices for improved stopping abilty
Check for current prices but in the range of $350 for a set of 2 new front slotted rotors and great pads
See the Off Topic link and Sponsored Sales for their item listings

You can get napa rotors and good pads for less, depending on your budget
Most of us shy away from ebay cheapies- mettalurgy is critical, its your Brakes!!

I have the racing brake slotted rotors all around with acura a-spec brake pads, the car stops a lot better, only downside is a bit of brake dust with the a-spec pads.

I have Rotora front OEM rotors anf front/rear rotora ceramic pads... Better stopping power then the OEM. Quiet and less brake dust. Good price as well. I got these from a vendor here.

RacingBrake makes its own pads specifically designed to work with the mettalury of their rotors.
Sure, they do get some dust because of the great friction!

Wax your rims with synthetic car wax- cuts way on on the dust abilty to stick!

The Mods that operate the board prefer you make those kinds of post via PM~
all for sale or wanted items should be listed in the Black Market section

Are these better than the stock brembo pads? Those are by far the best ones I have used so far.

IMO- the RacingBrake pads with their rotors will outperform and outlast any other brand
Its super strong metals working with each other- to work repeatedly corner after corner under duress--is my fave thing about them

The stock brembo setup is easily bested by Rotora pads/rotors (my other suggestion for brakes)...so if the stock brembo is the best you know of so far- go to an acurazine meet and get a ride in a few cars!~

You have to consider the stock brakes- even the Brembos- were a compromise of design to allow the car to be driven by mom and grandma, as well as the 20-30 set that want a more performance oriented stop.
The brembo calipers are very good-
and if you trade off more brake dust for more performance- and maybe a squeek now and then~,
or maybe you have to tap them a few seconds to warm them up to operating temp,,,,but you can drive it so late into the braking zone your passenger will reconsider ever asking you for a ride anymore~
There are some awesome options

Change your brake fluid too- its supposed to be flushed every year starting at year 3 for normal drivers
Thats not most of us~ we should do it starting year 1

I just received the RB ET300s. I'll be installing them this weekend on the stock Brembo rotors and let you know. Personally, I'll be pleasantly surprised if these equal or beat the OEM Brembo pads. I got 63,000 miles on the Brembo pads and was totally satisfied (and amazed) at their performance. I'm just looking for less dust with equal stopping power. Bear in mind that I have a 6MT, so this may be an apples to oranges comparison as far as you're concerned. The RB pads (300s and 500s) have received good reviews from others on this forum so I thought I'd give them a try.

make sure you remove the rotors and clean them to remove existing pad residue
Give the RBs a chance to work their best!!
120 grit wet/dry sandpaper will knock them clean- then spray brake cleaner to remove any grit residue
Follow the pad bedding instruction provided by MrHeelToe
http://heeltoeauto.com/httech/YaBB.pl?num=1184261899
May require a few times of doing it and the RB pads come to life

hint- wash the rims while they are off --then give them 3 coats of synthetic car wax especially on the inner side

Cuts down on brake dust adhesion to the rims

I'd like to hear your feedback when you have a chance to test the car. I've used two or three other pads and have not been happy with the results - so far the brembos have been the best by far.

I have et300s on my 01TL with RacingBrake's 1 piece slotted front rotors- nice combo- wife approved braking feel- good enough for street and basic backroads fun
For the more aggressive driver go with et500 IMO

^ - Don't get hawk. There are better pads. Those have been the most disappointing ones so far.

OK....

Now I am back to square one....I mean, I thought HP+ and HPS Pads were good. So should I be looking into ceramic pads. What brand out there makes good pads?

Should I just go with a whole RacingBrake setup (Pads and Rotors)?

Just got the et300s installed. Did not turn the rotors (they were in great shape) but did pull them and sand them followed by a wash. Cleaned the inside of the calipers and the pucks. Also cleaned the pins and springs. Greased the back of the pads, the caliper pins, and the springs where they touched the pads and pins. Did the bedding procedure on Mr. Heeltoe's web site. Felt a little fade on the third and last 80mph to 40mph run (but that's to be expected). Absolutely no noise so far. Bite seems good, but it's still too early to say much about performance. So far, so good! More updates on performance and dusting to follow....

OK

So I have a little over 30K on my car and I have to do one of those routine check ups...

I wanted to buy the rotors and pads and ask them to put in on for me while they are going through everything. I called to verify if they would and the dealership said they will not install aftermarket parts like rotors or pads. I called Midas and they wanna charge me over $200 just for labor. I don't want to put it on myself....is there an option or alternative that I a not looking into?

private owned auto repair shops- there are many that specialize in honda/acura

whats youtr budget- that determines what you can buy
and finding a local ziner to help install is easy- just ask for help!
