Type-S Custom Exhaust?

Last week I decided to modify the stock exhaust of my type-s, first going stage 4 then stage 3. Now I'm not sure if the sound is really all that different between base and type-s models but damn, my exhaust sounds awful.

Everyone I have spoken with thinks the sound is out of place, more fitting for a 4 cylinder with rice cannons, not a 3.5l V6.

I really don't know what to do. I stand to be over a hundred dollars out between all of the welding and resonator.

I know I'm gonna get "Go with a ATLP, RV6 or XLR8 cat-back" and those are fine options, but unjustifiably expensive.

What I want to know is if anyone has built custom setups and how do they sound?

Has anyone tried to bypass the rear mufflers and just go right to the quad tips?

Pipe diameter recommendations?

Anyone with a custom true-dual setup?

you went full retard.
you know those little "suggestions" with stain removers;
"try an inconspicuous spot first"???

lol should have applied it to exhaust as well.
try the VERY least aggressive and then step up.

you went stage 4 and are now trying to back track!!!

if you straight pipe, you'll get an even WORSE sound.

In my defense, I wanted to go stage 1 but I bought the res just in case. Went to my muffler guy, he recommend the straight pipes, had that for the evening and went back to put the res in, and here I am.

I'll take that it wasn't the best route, but unless the stage 1-2 mods can miraculously deepen the low rpm tone and increase the volume at high rpms I don't think my situation would be any different.

The plan is to build a catback with fresh pipes of a larger diameter. Any suggestions?

Justin's first post made me laugh out loud at work, haha.

I've seen some custom setups mentioned on here for about 500 to 600, just gotta go through the performance section and try to find them

I'll be one of those guys that says spend a few extra hundred dollars and get a system you know sounds great, performs well, and has been tested and proven to provide enjoyment. My XLR8 quad exhaust is my favorite mod by far

That's a great point, my concern is the way it sounds. I've listened to the merchant's comparisons and I'm not a big fan of the way it sounds.
Would you say that your setup is girlfriend/wife approved?

yes, you're in luck. I'll link you a vid and then i'll have to take off to class and some side errands, expect no further responds from me for some hours lol

I've been single for too long so I don't know, but females I've taken in the car don't seem to mind it /shrug

Keep in mind the video I will link here does not have the sound with the 1/4 wave length resonators installed.

The sound in the video is 3" all the way with ONE magnaflow resonator and ONE spintech 3" venturi pipe. It sounds very lumpy and beastly BUT will beast rape your ears inside the car. Shortly after enjoying my ears being gone, I installed 2 more small resonators and 2 quarter wave resonator tubes.

I'll try to get a video of it's current sound sometime today when available.
Also sound recorded in videos generally do not do great justice

If you're concerned about mandrel bends, why not take these pipes to him and see what he can some up with? You can choose 2.25, 2.5" or 3" http://www.mandrelexhaustsystems.com...EXHAUST/Detail
**Disclaimer: I don't have any experience with this vendor**

I personally like the XLR8 quad exhaust from the clips as well as the RV6 TD, but for quads that wide I'd need to have a TLS ASPEC lip repainted to RRP. Too much hassle for me. But with your TLS you have the quad tips option of true custom as well as the site sponsored brands. Pull the trigger and then post the results

See if there is someone local to you so you can hear one of the vendor exhausts in person, they really do sound great.

My setup is definitely wife approved haha, a very important question. I put on the xlr8 resonated and no wife issues, great sound and loudness.

Added HFPCs and it was slightly too loud, so I added a larger resonator in place of the xlr8 one, and now it's definitely wife approved again. And FYI I have a HFC on my xlr8 jpipe.

Wow that sounds amazing. How is the noise below 2500 rmps? I have a hefty commute and the drone on my current setup is killing me

I actually don't understand how it sounds awful? If you went from stage 4, but then replaced the straight pipe that replaced the stock resonator with the dynomax resonator, wouldn't it just go back to sounding like stage 3? Which means you hate the sound of stage 3?

thanks, if you're @ 2k-2.2 don't really hear it for the most part. Drone is subjective but there is drone but can speak with normal tone of voice and be heard so maybe it's not so bad?

Pretty much. I had a mustang that i just threw a 28" glasspack on and it sounded just fine, so I assumed that the dynomax res with the two end mufflers would provide a subtle low rumble...nope. The sound is very tinny and reminiscent of a camry with straight pipes imo.

I just wanted a subtle rumble at low rps and bat-outta-hell when vtec activates, without breaking the bank

Would you say that it's girlfriend approved? Or something that I could drive my boss in without being fired? haha

hmm not sure lol and if your boss likes automotive to an extent should be fine.

There is a meet in union city on friday if you going you can find out for yourself. In anycase, more mufflers/resonators or extending of the 1/4 wave tubes can be done to lower sound levels if need be

or just tell them to deal w/ it lol
