Turbo

Does anyone know where i can pick up a turbo manifold, downpipe and charge pipes for an Acura TL Type S? The only thing i saw was JnR turbo kit but the price is wicked up there. It would be nice for someone to mass produce these kits to keep the pricing affordable. It shouldn't cost more than 4000 dollars to get a good setup.

Get in touch with Matt at Hickam Series in Ft Worth, Tx.
682.478.8246

He was the fabricator for my current turbo setup in my 6g Accord. One of the best in the industry IMO. Tell him Robert sent you and that I told you that he will give you 60% off the final bill just to mess with him.

if you find a turbo set up for under 4K you will make the manufacturer very very rich very very quickly!!!

Most set ups run 8K plus up to 10 K and require a lot of time and work. good luck!

labor is a different story. You're telling me that even with used parts this isn't possible? if only Kraftwerks could produce something for the TLS while retaining PS/AC. I already saw gerzard's thread. I've been following it but haven't seen a price tag on that setup. What is Matt at Hickam Series email?

To give you an idea, if you can't tig weld and fabricate, your looking at around $2000 alone for the exhaust manifold.

I find that exceptionally high of a price, even for custom work. Ideally, the TL should be much EASIER than most vehicles since there is only one pipe off of each head. It's like because it's different, people think it should cost more. Sure, there aren't any GodSpeed or Chinese knockoffs for $100, but I think a nice, high quality Turbo manifold should be in the neighborhood of $750, and no more than $1000.

I think the ideal situation would be to purchase the RV6 PCDs since they have the cast portion off the head, and then simply create an 'up-pipe' to where the turbo would mount. I see no reason that should cost $1600 to make considering the PCDs are $400.

Now I better get to work or Richie will take that idea and build it! LOL

The one question I'd have for people in emissions states - if something goes BETWEEN your cats, are you still carb legal?

I know you cant remove or move the cataylst, which makes the TL ideal for a carb approved turbo kit. Simply swap the J-pipe out for a turbo setup, and I'd think it would still be legal. It would pass visual at least since the precats are still in place, as well as the third cat. Emissions is a different story, but tunes can fix that.

Piping is only one part of the cost. When you start adding up everything needed to complete a turbo build most people give up.

If it were that cheap you'd see a lot more people doing it.

For my inspection, I just need a visible cat.

You don't need the 3rd cat for most states. There's no sensor on it, so no CEL without it. It's only there so Acura could get some environmental emissions rating. New J-pipes now a days eliminate it and connect pre-cats directly to exhaust.

My comments were directed at what flexer said about a manifold alone costing $2000. I can assure you your kit would have been on the tune of $10K from JnR if they had counted on $2000 of it being the manifold alone.

Yes, once you add in all the ancillaries, a turbo does add up quick, but not a manifold. The only items in the cost are: piping, flanges (had and to turbo) and then labor.

I saw Hickam's manifold for a J32A2 in the BM, and it is amazing and MUCH more time consuming and material heavy versus what an A3 would need. Essentially, he's right in the ballpark on price with it because that's about $900 per side, and I see that as a fair price for multiple primaries with bends, curves, etc. A single pipe off the head? No way. There just isn't the material or fabrication time in it. When that gets truly realized, and some of the other things that I would call 'trifling' issues are sorted, stand back because we will start seeing some nice, relatively inexpensive kits.

I think the turbo thread started with a guy running a remote mount under the car. My concern would be debris and how far the turbo is from the heads if you go the usual STS route and run the turbo at the mufflers.

That's either been posted here or on V6p. Not a bad price for what you get - the 5K is not installed - add another grand. Plus, an AEM isn't the best way for tuning when a Hondata is available. Add another $1200 - 1500 for that. It also doesn't say if that price is tuned for not. Add another $350 - 500 for that.

I wonder if they would sell just the hot side? I don't need/want a Precision Turbo, much less a 57mm T3/T4. There are compromises with every system and I'm not sure that one makes the compromises I'm willing to tolerate as well.

I spoke with kmod through email this morning. They don't ship out those kits. You need to bring your car there so they can test fit everything. You are in the same boat as me. I only want the pipes for the hot side. It's better to have options to bolt any turbo and use whatever ECM.
