Tuning & Performance of the J35??
Tuning & Performance of the J35??
Hey everyone. I have an honest question about the differences in the j35 engine and how it's tuned in its various different vehicles.
we have always had hondas have usually really liked them. We have a 2010 Honda Odyssey now and it's great.
Well my wife went out and bought an 08 TL Auto for our kid. It's the Type S so we're not worried about the Trans or anything really. One thing that does concern me is I drove the car to work, and it is noticeably MUCH slower than our Odyssey. I promise this isn't a shit post. I'm curious if the motor is tuned for "Led Foots" in this car or something. I feel like the acceleration in my Odyssey is really smooth and effortless. This TL I just don't know.. for me to even get up to speed in this thing I feel like I'm always having to floor it.. doesn't feel really "sporty" to me. Anyone have experience with this?

Ah!, now you've had a change in mind and are currently throwing away the TL to your youngin?
Being 26 yourself that seems odd....

...it makes me want to cry.... I have had unbelievably bad luck out of this car.. This is my 4th Honda that I've owned, and sadly I believe it will be my last. I have had so many problems out of my previous Hondas, and sadly this Type S being as clean as it is... has made me decide to purchase Lexus from now on.. Any advice before I throw this car away, switch to Toyota, and NEVER look back?

the J35A8 in your son's type S should feel much faster than the 3.5L in your Odyssey.. even though both are powered by a J35 the 2 engines are completely different and tuned completely different...
For reference:
the J35 in the 2010 Odyssey makes only 244hp and 240tq and weighs anywhere between 700 to 1000lbs MORE than the TL Type S (curb weight for Odyssey is 4300 to 4600+ lbs)
where as your son's J35 makes 286hp and 256tq and weighs around 3650lbs
also note that 1 car is tuned for economy/towing and the other is tuned to be more sportier
you shouldnt even be able to compare both engines together because of how different they are but the fact that you're saying the minivan is faster or feels like you need less pedal input to get the van moving means theres something wrong with your son's car..
I would run a scan and see if you can pull any CEL codes from the TL and go from there.. if theres no CEL then inspect the 2 precats and the 3rd cat under the car to see if they are clogged.. clogged cats will definitely reduce performance and make the car feel slow/sluggish, although typically if they get that bad you should be seeing a CEL code for the downstream o2 sensor
If you suspect bad engine performance, then get a compression test done on all cylinders and see how much psi each cylinder has.. according to the manual: "Compression Pressure: above 930 kPa (9.5 kgf/cm2, 135 psi)
Maximum variation: within 200 kPa (2.0 kgf/cm2, 28 psi)"
so it should have over 135psi with less than a 28psi variance between cylinders... i personally think 135psi sounds too low... if your motor is healthy ive seen anywhere between 200-240psi since these are high compression engines

When The Clock Turns 100k
Hey there. I've actually experienced the same thing you've mentioned above. Troll post or not I have also driven Honda Odysseys..Civics even that have smoked my TL.. i have an 08 Type S auto. It's had pretty much all the required maintenance it's supposed to at 150k miles. I've had the car for 4 years. Since it had 70k on it. I noticed one day around 105-110k miles that it started getting slower and slower and slower.. lol
I tried new coils, tried cleaning my throttle body and EGR, hell even made sure that my tires were good, no breaks were sticking etc.
put the car on a dyno and sure enough at full throttle the vehicle was only putting 197 hp down to the wheels.
lolol. kinda pissed me off that my Type S had basically turned into a gas guzzling 3600LB tow truck...
Someone recommended a Valve Adjustment which kinda made me shudder because of nightmares with past 6gen accord that had HORRIBLE valve clearance issues after 100k miles. As much as I didn't want to I went and had a Valve Adjustment done..put it back on the dyno and magically the car was pushing 215hp back to the wheels. A big improvement but still slow carrying itself and my weight.. lol the main issue with these 8th Gen TLs is that they have a very inefficient auto trans that REALLY wears out over the years not to mention your TL is USED meaning its probably had a really rough life so far.. ppl dont treat these cars well. Also the issue with the 6gen accord v6 and how ornery the Valve Clearance can get DOES seem to be an issue no one talks about on these forums.. MY TL has to have an Adjustment EVERY YEAR or its slow as fuck again and again like clock work. lol low key Honda VTech is dumbb and the fact that they still use Solid Lifters is SUCH a nuisance. It's the biggest reason these cars are slow as fuck.
