Trailer Hitch on a 07 TL
Trailer Hitch on a 07 TL
I notice Acura discourages all towing but I need to bring a boat, maximum load weight 1800 lbs., to my home 700 miles north of Tampa, Florida.
I wonder the consequences if I pull it.
Any experiences out there?

It's not so much the engine but the trans and possibly rear suspension that I would worry about.
If it's an auto, when accelerating, do so easily. When cruising down the freeway on flat ground, keep it in 4th gear and when going uphill if in doubt, err on the lower gear side. High rpms in a lower gear will generate less heat in the trans than high load and low rpms. I would definately keep it at 55mph/4th gear. Give it 30mins to cool every hour to hour and a half.
Since you're going to be working it hard for an extended period, use a high quality 10w-30 oil. Mobil One 0w-40 would also be an excellent choice coming from Tampa.
A synthetic trans fluid will take the extra heat better.
Keep in mind that the TL has 65% of it's weight on the front tires, you don't want the boat spinning you out. I would be very careful the trailer is balanced well. The rear suspension doesn't have much spring stiffness so it doesn't take much to really compress the rear and cause excessive tire wear from the extra camber.
If done slow and sane, you can probably do it without hurting the car.
