Post To TL-S or not to TL-S???

I currently have an 05 TL 6mt with a few mods. I'm considering buying either an 07 or 08 6mt TL-S. Thing is, i'm not quite sure there's much of a difference in power if I add custom exhausts, j-pipe, etc. I'd appreciate your on this one, and what mods can I get in order to have as much (or more) power as the TL-S??

the 6MT TL-S made the most power to the wheels stock..

if you're 05 6MT was fully bolted on, you'd be close to hitting the stock type-s horsepower....
So, with the same mods, the Type-s will be 15-20hp Over the base at all times.

but, its silly to buy a new car when the 05 works perfectly fine.
Unless, you can make out even with buying and selling the TL's

^ What Justin said.

I was faced with a similar situation but wasn't able to justify the cost with the minor improvements. There was a NBP TL-S 6-speed for sale this summer that I test drove at the dealership just for fun while I was there with a buddy getting the oil changed in him MDX. Although I knew I could "transform" the car into a much better vehicle than it is stock, I couldn't wait to get back in my own TL. I didn't even notice the 'extra' power. About the only thing that impressed me were the interior extras such as red lighting instead of blue, seat stitching and instrument cluster changes. With the TL diet, aspec (or better) suspension and bolt on's I could theoretically get it past where my '06 6MT is now as far as agility and power. But my 06 is so far past a stock TL-S that I didn't even want to consider "downgrading" from where I'm at now while paying a hefty premium for the Type-S badge then doing everything over again. No thanks.

But if I weren't to the point I am now I suppose I might consider it.

^Agree. Seems silly to me too. How many miles on the 05? A 6MT type-s will prob cost substantially more then what you can sell the 05 for, and then there's always the task of finding one. Is your TL paid for, if it is id keep it and start modding.

Or, dare i say it, buy something with more power and better aftermarket performance parts. That is if you are only doing this for a faster car.

This. If you're going to upgrade, do more than buy a better trim of the same vehicle.

I went from an 07 base nav to a Type s and don't regret it whatsoever. And that's already coming from the updated 07 so coming from an 05 would be even more of a jump. It's your call man, but it's always cool to have the top of the line car. I was never completely happy with my C6 corvette until I got the C6 Z06, or when I had my Grand Cherokee limited...yup you guessed it, I had to have the SRT8 lol. I have learned my lesson since and now get what I really want the first time.

However, if your pretty happy with your car and don't think you will appreciate all the changes to the Type S then just keep yours until you feel the need to move into an entirely different car like others have said. If you absolutely love the 3G and plan to keep it for a decent amount of time then heck yeah go for it.

Get a 6mt type-s. They are super sexy, but they need a slight drop. the stock wheel gap is almost a full 4 fingers

Base TL gets better gains from Pre Cat Deletes and weighs a little less.

Do the 3.7 manifold and maybe some type S cams n ull be making the same power dude... Considering ull have to spend so much more for the type S.. if someone can really say fully bolted a base makes stock type S power is rediculous... Plus ull still be lighter

Stock 6spd base usually dynos ~225-235 while a bone stock 6spd TL-S puts down ~245-255

I think it'll be on par with a stock TL-S 6spd or maybe SLIGHTLY more powerful than the TL-S but not by much.

if you had a 5AT base, then I'd say yes go for the 6mt type-s. But you already have a 6mt, which means you already have all the performance advantages of a Type-S 6mt, excepting for the additional horsepower - i.e. you already have limited slip diff and brembo brakes.

stick with your current car.

Well I didn't buy it new so I didn't pay anywhere near 75k for it. I did good though I got it with 6,000 one owner miles for 40k and the car was absolutely insanely fast. In my defense the ZR1 was not available yet when I had my Z06 lol. So at the time it was the top dog. Regardless though I can't afford even a first year used ZR1, but the Z06 did the trick and I couldn't imagine adding another 100hp to the already ridiculous Z06 acceleration. My corvette days are done for the time being especially with a two year old running around and probably another one on the way soon. Damn kids haha

Thanks for that. I currently have 110k on my TL, so i will just do some mods (3.7 swap, etc) that will get me more power instead of getting a TL-S because it'll cost more without giving out a lot more power than my 6mt. Plus it's a little bit hard giving up your first car (even for a slightly better version of it)

sorry am very late to the party brother....

but +1 on the opinions that have been voiced here...

I would define your goals first...something in the lines of "I want the car to handle well" or "I want my TL to be very fast"....

if you want to stick to a FWD 4 door platform, and a TL at that, I think the Type S 6MT is a great option....no matter what you do, the a fully bolted on Type S will always be faster/quicker than a fully bolted on Base (removing the driver variable plus assuming similar tires/weight etc)....

if you feel the TL is plenty quick, why not venture into a sportier car...something like the S2000/BRZ...or if sticking to a sedan then a EVO/etc....

Like every car is different, I like the TL because of the reliability factor....mine is a 2005 5AT and it has been through a lot of mods intake/exhaust/interior/exterior and she is still going great at 178K miles....the only item that failed on me was the rear caliper not bad for a 8 year old car....

Thanks for the advice..I decided to stick to my 05 6MT and add some mods to it. Like the guys said, it doesn't make much sense for me to get the type-s when it costs way more than my current car does.

You can also pick up the TL-S front anti-roll bar pretty cheaply (compared to aftermarket) at your Acura dealer. Plus I'd assume your '05 is paid for, so for what you'd be making in payments over the next year, you can do quite a bit to your current car.

That's kind of where I am with my Accord. I do like the TL interior more, plus the added displacement but in my case, upgrading to the base TL would be similar to you going to the TL-S. Yeah, its a better car but hard to justify the extra cost since my car is paid for and also modified. But upgrading to a 6 MT TL-S would make more sense in my case than in yours because even stock there would be a performance improvement.
