Stuck in 4th Gear on the HWY

So after installing the full bolt on setup (J-pipe, Race-Pipe, Catback) I find myself driving in 4th gear a lot on the highways to prevent hearing that gawd awful drone that comes up around 2K RPM. In 4th, I'm at least at 2500 RPM or above cruising around 70. I find that if I maintain my RPMs above 2200 then I won't encounter any drone. Anyone have this problem too?

He lists Billy Boat catback but I didn't know they made anything for a 3G.

Not sure if you were going for looks or sound but I think you have to live with some level of drone if you are going for sound.

I suppose if you are looking for free flowing, you could replicate the placement of mid-muffler and resonator to a larger diameter.

Could also try adding sound deadener to the interior.

Billy Boat makes the XLR8 exhaust...

I hear yah I put this on my car 2 weeks ago 07 TL-S you get most drone around 2200rpm... its a bit loud at times depends though... overall i knew when purchasing an exhaust that was loud that your going to hear it in the car as well so I cant complain... If I wanted a quite car then I would have stayed with my stock setup.

Not sure what you can do now to get rid of the drone... I have the resonated version and there still is drone thats just part of the game i guess.

simple. because we never had an aftermarket exhaust before and thought drone was something from Star Wars!

BTW - I am kidding about the Star Wars part.

I have the same problem. I have two solutions:

1) If you have passengers, go faster.
2) If you are alone go ever faster.

On the streets my car doesn't get to fifth gear. I have the J-pipe and catback.

Shift into 5th or 6th. Oh you don't have a manual?

A GOOD aftermarket exhaust won't drone. I doubt any of these systems have the R&D necessary to have a loud exhaust without the drone. I've posted in other threads the common ways to eliminate drone.

My GN is pretty loud out the tailpipes yet barely noticable inside the car at 65mph and 1,800rpm. It took some time to get it right. Same with my friend's CL65. It's very loud on the outside with no drone inside.

With my jeep 318 I had CAI chip PnP headers no cat straight pipe to magnaflow and it was (LOUD)awesome sounding.
Like you said it only drones at certain highway speeds. I didn't really drive the jeep on the highway, but when I did it sounded wound up with my gear ratio. In fact I put the cat back on later to gain some low end torque and quiet it down. you just have to play with it before you get your sound right. Maybe you will like the power gain on the top end and the drone won't matter. Just give it time and see. The sound may change.
