I think comptech is the only one. It does not make the shifter shorter but it makes the throws shorter. In order to make the actually shifter shorter you will have to thread and cut the oem shift IIRC

I think that's true. But it is worth it. I'm thinking about cutting mine down from the top as well.

there's another one that was selling a while ago, neospeed or nuespeed or some crap. Comptech is the best though, from experience.

Would this mod be worth it? Also, is it hard to install?

But not that hard. The worst part is getting the silver strips off for the first time. After that it's pretty easy.

sorry to bump such an old thread but didn't want to make a new one

how safe are these short shifters? how prone are they to failing and leaving you stranded somewhere?

can you buy a stock shifter and cut it? i might do that also... i just don't want to mess up cutting and then be screwed lol rather have two

I've had a couple of valets break the u-shaped clip on the mechanism. They just don't realize it's in gear and keep trying to push forward. It only takes about 30 minutes to fix, but it's not cool to work on your car in the restaurant parking lot. Just be sure to tell anybody that may be driving your car what's up.

Wow, a couple times? Is it at the same place? I would make sure to fix it right in the way of their traffic so the place knows that their valet's are gorillas.

I've never had an issue with mine either.

I have had a short shifter in the glove box for over a year now and still can't bring myself to do it. I am just too lazy to take half my car apart to get to it.

it's not the comptech one, it's the copy some company made. A lot of mazda guys get short shifters from this company and never had problems. This one looks identical to the comptech one so if you are still interested PM me. I have to warn you, it's gonna be cheap haha

I'm a big fan of the Voodoo countersunk shift knobs. The lower the shift knob to be screwed on so it sits about 3/4 inch lower than stock. I've had them on my Miata's in the past and sprung for the Titanium one for my TL-S. The extra weight of the titanium, 7 oz. for this knob, really adds some heft to the shifter. It was stupid expensive though, $175 new but I found one used on ebay for $125. I was feeling buyers remorse about spending that much money on a shift knob until I got it and installed it. Probably the best "mod" I've done so far, no regrets. As a bonus, it matches the other shiny bits inside with the knob being just a bit darker.
