Removing Speed Limiter

The other day, at 2am on an empty highway 15n in San Diego, I topped out my car at 150. Is there any way to take off the speed chip so that I can go faster than that?
I know my TL can hit 170 at least. Not that I would do it. hehe.

doubt the tl will hit 170. Aerodynamics will take over before you reach that speed.

Maybe I am missing somethng, but two years ago I had mine radar confirmed at 158 before the gov kicked in. Was my speedo and the radar wrong?

I guess I'm the only old fogey that gets infuriated at posts like this... 2am or not, you're on public roads. I travel with my family at night to avoid traffic. At 150, you have absolutely no control of the car. if ther's a beer bottle in the road, your dead.

Save your 150mph jaunts for the tracks guys. I'm suprised the mods don't jump on this behavior. They won't let you post how to disable the seatbelt nag, but will let you post about your WRECKLESS driving exploits.

Have fun killing yourself and that happy family on vacation.

there is no govener that im aware of on the tl. you prolly hit the "wall". where the wind resistance generated meets the power output of the engine.

It is electronically limited to 147. My gauges read 150 when I have hit it twice. As far as I know there is no way to remove this. Maybe if Uni-chip decided to make a pnp piggyback computer for the TL like they make for the accords they would be able to eliminate it.

you shouldn't want or need to go any faster......especially on a public road.

it never ceases to amaze me how many people boo-hoo when going fast is spoken of. He asked a question, lets stick to the subject. I suppose advising of bad things is the right thing to do, such as going past advertised tire speed limits etc.. But I think these people already have weighed the risks involved and are going to do what they are going to do anyways. I for one am moving to germany next month so I WILL be looking for means to disable my top speed limiter because I WILL want to go faster than 150mph on the autobahn. Thats just me though.

It is my understanding that the TL is not electronically limited, but is drag limited above 150 MPH.

I am going to have to go with road and track on this one. I have hit the top speed limiter in both 5th gear adn 6th gear. When I was on the highway and hit it I went to 144mph and then shifted to 6th adn pulled hard to 150mph UPHILL and then went downhill adn stayed at 150mph (speedometer reading). Also I was on the dyno yesterday adn I did a pull in 3rd, 4th, and 5th to see which gear was closest to 1:1 cause I didnt know at the time (it is 4th like most cars) and I hit the top speed limiter in 5th which obviously shows it is not drag limited. Amazing that car and driver would publish inaccurate information.

I understand where you're coming from. When I went 150, I did it with no cars in sight. Therefore, if I were to kill anyone, it would be myself. I have aftermarket tires a very low drop on TEIN SS so the car is relatively stable at that speed.

Anyhow, I don't think that wind resistance is the factor limiting the top speed. I felt the engine go dead around 150. Like the power is cut off or something. I'm pretty sure its a chip that is limiting the speed. Called Acura and a mechanic today, told me they didn't like to screw with the computer. Hopefully someone can figure this out.

forgive me and kennedy for adding some sense into this thread. it is not safe for the driver of the car and anyone else on this public road with any driver operating at these speeds.

at a track or on the autobahn is a different story, but 90+% of TL's on this board will never see either of the above.

Kind of childish to point fingers. I am sure if that were the case that it would be less than 150. That is fast as hell. I think it has a lot to do with the tire speed ratings. I wonder what the exact reasons are for implementing a top speed governor are. Strange because my 00 Accord V-6 didn't have a governor, although it was drag limited. I had it to 145.

The car does have an electronic speed limiter.. Even Hondata is trying to figure out a way to remove it. All cars from Japan are electroncally speed governed to 155 mph. It's a matter of removing it.

Maybe thats just around the cars limit without any upgrades.

And seriously come on we all know we've all have pretty much pushed are cars around 80 or more and if u hit anyone or anything at that speed it'll be pretty nasty so just stick to the topic ok, everyone speeds now and then and gets tempted to push the car to its limit.

I was thinking the same thing when I came across this thread. Apparently we are allowed to talk about how to ungovern the car so that we can go 170 but it is unsafe to talk about how to get the chiming to stop on the seat belt warning. I LOVE IT!

I kind of agree - but one difference being that people will take their TL's to the track and run them up.

2 Things wrong with this post::

1: The TL is not from Japan, its made here in the states. Just a technicality, but it has not even been offered anywhere else but North America until recent months.

2: My S2000, which was from Japan, was not limited at 155. It was also drag limited at about 165 or so according to the speedometer. I had mine at 158 on tw occasions, and there was still power, ran out of room.

If the TL does have an electronic limiter, which I still dont think it does, it's not becasue of Japan.

you wanna drive your car like a freaking idiot, the by all means go right ahead. Im not here to lecture you. I do think its stupid, but if you want to do it, then knock yourself out.

If you really had a problem with this thread you could of just PM'd a mod....
