Rear BBK

I've been wondering for a while...

What do you all think about an aftermarket set of rear brake calipers? Are there any available, and if there are, would anybody consider getting a set?

the brake bias on a fwd car is ~70/30

Go big on the fronts with better rotors and pads
the rears- better rotors and pads
calipers??? too much hassle to be worth it

Ever see a fwd race car do a quick 180 under braking?
wanna guess why? and they all have a knob to balance the brake bias!

well, rotora makes (2) seperate kits for the TL.. a 2piston and a 4piston, both pretty expensive ... $1400 & $1700 respectively..

now, since i have 2 extra brembo calipers, i've been looking into custom fitting them on to my rear for an overall sick appearance and excellent braking performance...

I wanted to replace the calipers because the calipers on a A/T TL look awful, not to mention they underperform in comparision to the 6M/T.

I don't get why Acura couldn't give the 6M/T and 5A/T the same brakes and rear sway bar, I would have even paid extra if it was a factor installed option.

blackura- dont you already have experience with the rear brake bringing the car around?

I believe the pads are the same for all the at cars from 00-07
Does anyone know for sure if the calipers stayed the same during that time?

i would imagine...

the calipers were the same for 04-06 TL M/T, 07 - 08 TL-S MT & AT

they actually have different part number extensions.. like #1100015-05A & 1100015-10A.. but they are completely interchangeable

the 5AT calipers really are eh...the rears are even worse looking on both 5AT & 6MT... aside from a spending $1500+ on a BBK, your only other option is to retro-fit the brembo's onto the back... maybe ill accomplish this..

har har

actually it was the front brakes on my car... and the whole thing happened because the 5AT brakes were so bad... i couldnt stand them!

How will EBFD react to the increased brake potential in the back? Will you be able to maintain the Front/Rear brake distribution? That'd be my biggest concern.

You'll have to deal with the E-Brake and Rotor size too, after you put those Brembo's on the back.

I agree it'll look good, but you don't want to brake for something routine and have the backs lock up or something.

I'm actually probably going to do just that...but the rear calipers look so ugly compared to the fronts. I could paint the rear calipers, but they're already black, just not glossy black like darksom1's...

Is it too much to ask to have Brembo's in the rear AS WELL as the front?! Infiniti's have it...

well I drove a car with rear bbk, and it was instant stopping power I was shocked how well the breaks worked I mean I figured eh they are just breaks... till you go into a curve at 80 and with a slight tap you enter it doing 30 (yes, its that serious)

rotora bbk (slotted rotors) all the way around

There are a few members on here with front and rear ROTORA BBK's. Actros, MichaelBenz (He had 4 piston front and rear and he did some track time and he loved them), and a few others. I can't remember their AZ name at the moment. It will help. However, there is a more frontward brake bias so the fronts will make more of a difference.

I had installed the 4-piston on my friend's 07-TLS, it doesn't make that big of a difference in braking, as the brake porportioning (sp) valve will only allow the back brakes a certain percentage of the overall braking (maybe 30%)... I think they are more for looks......

Since this thread is about rear brakes...

Something else I've been wondering about: If our cars' brake bias is 70F/30R, and let's just assume that most cars' brakes are front biased...then why do some cars brakes throw off more brake dust on the rear tires, and not the front, as our TL's (which I would consider normal)?

Case in point: My previous car, an A4, and my wife's current car, a Jetta GLI. Keep in mind that my A4 was quattro, but my wife's GLI is FWD. On both cars, brake dust is highly visible on the rear wheels, not as much on the front wheels.

What gives?

Could be how the air circulates under the car (model dependant). I noticed that I had much less dust on my rims after switching to rims with more open area and after I removed the splash shields around the rotors. It seems that there must be a strong breeze around the rotors keeping the dust away. Just my theory.

The rear brake dust is probably a product of the pad compound. My A4 did the same thing.

I see, blueracer. That would make sense...what doesn't make sense is the reason for having a different compound pad in the rear than the front. Still, the front brake bias would/should make the pads up front create more dust?!?!

Alright guys, it's time for a front brake job. Here are my 3 choices:

(1)Get new OEM pads, and rotors replaced @ the stealership for ~$400.
(2)Rotora slotted rotors/ ceramic pads.
(3)Racingbrake 2-piece rotors/Hawk pads.

What do you all think? Please chime in with choice, and reasons WHY? Thanks in advance!

Either 2 or 3. I can't comment on technical/performance differences between those two.

I'd go After Market for the expectation of over-all improved braking, better heat disapation, reduced dusting and over-all looks. You *can* go Hawk pads with the Rotora Rotors if that suits your fancy.

I'd also consider SS brake lines for improved pedal feel and if you track or autocross performance/high BP brake fluid.
