Re: PCDs, + V3 J-Pipe + CT Exhaust = Raasssppp?!?

Hey Azine,

Please help me out here. I'm experiencing crazy rasp after the installation of the PCDs and J-Pipe. Seeing how I have a CT Exhaust that has a mid-muffler, I was expecting minimal rasp at certain RPMs, but my situation is that I have rasp whenever i step on it. Even at like 1K RPM I will hear the tinny noise just by accelerating normally, the only time that I don't hear rasp or very little rasp is when I drive like a grandma. Is this normal or is there another problem? (Exhaust leak or so)

Thanks~~

I believe the rasp is caused by the PCD.

You're gonna want a resonator with that setup

Thanks,

That's what I'm planning to get, except the level of rasp right now seems way too much seeing how I can't move anywhere without rasp. I've read all the threads related to PCDs that I could search up before I made the install and everyone only mentions a small rasp within a RPM range of 2-3.5k, non-resonated and using raspier exhausts than mine (XLR8, ATLP, etc). So, it had me scared when I can't even put my foot on the pedal without my car making loud raspy noises at any rpm.

It's not just his PCD.

The Rv6 Jpipe adds a bit of rasp, combining the 2 without a resonator will get you very raspy.
I also have the RV6 Jpipe, once you flow more on the pcats, the rasp grows

I'm also not getting used to the smell. In fact, I don't like it at all. Will adding a hi-flow cat > resonator after the j-pipe help with both the smell and the rasp?

Oh btw, would doing an ecu reset somewhat help the situation? I will get around to fixing it, but as of now, I don't even want to drive the damn thing .

Put a cat back on there if you don't like the smell.

the smell will be there for the life of the car. adding the 3rd cat will reduce smell. add a resonator about 6-10 inches away from the 3rd cat in your case the bottom flange. 3rd cat, resonator, mid muffler, dual muffler, rasp-free n smell free.

an ecu reset is always recoomended when you change any part on the car.

How was the performance gain from the upgrades?

To be honest...I haven't tested the gains yet cause I do not want to step on it due to the terrible sound that it's making. I believe now that I am experiencing an exhaust leak because I can hear a hissing sound no matter how lightly I tap on the pedal. It's probably due to me not having proper gaskets for the connection between the j-pipe and PCDs. I have ordered a gasket set from Richie and will report back once I have the proper gaskets installed. I hope it'll fix the problem....

ATLP sounds so much better.

This is why I'm a big advocate of the HFC's. 75-80% of the power of PCD's, no smell, no need to go hacking up an expensive exhaust to add resonators, no need to add a third high flow cat which will negate most of the power advantage that makes people opt for the PCD's in the first place.

The HFC's are more expensive initially, but in the end, they're probably the more cost effective option.

I have the same setup on my TL but I also cut out the mid muffler. Pretty much I have straight pipe from my PCDs to the 2 Comptech mufflers. Yes it's loud and raspy, but that's how I like it. Then again I'm probably younger than a lot of you guys and I come from a background where my other toys are all motor B series civics. I plan on doing a high compression 3.6 stroker soon so I'm definitely looking forward to how that sounds.

How bad is the rasp? I have my mid-muffler intact and want to know what to expect after I fix my stupid leak from my J-Pipe. Is there a specific range in RPMs where it's way more noticable?

Update: I've installed Richie's gasket yesterday and the hissing noise toned down by a lot. However these are still some hissing noise left, which I learned to be common (from a lil research on Azine) with the PCD install so...I guess it's..."fixed"?. Right now it's raspy as hell though...so with my setup, should I be going for the magnaflow 10426 resonator or perhaps a bigger one would be better?

Setup: RV6 V3 PCDs > RV6 V3 J-Pipe > Comptech Catback

So how's the power feel?

The first 2 weeks I haven't really stepped on it because of the horrible hissing noise + rasp. I was quite embarrassed to drive it tbh.... I did try it once in an empty back street and was amazed by how quickly 80-110km felt. (I have not resetted ECU yet at this point)

I've just tried the ignition ECU reset method last night but unfortunately it was raining today, so didn't get to play much. I did try some hard on acceleration in 2nd gear, but trying to get the TL to pull from 30km in 2nd gear is quite pointless and with traffic being heavy, I really only got to around 80km before I had to let off....I'll do more test drives when the weather gets better

For the price though, it definitely is the best bang for your buck if you desire more power. No doubt in my mind that I felt way more gains with the PCDs + Jpipe installed compared to when I had my Comptech Exhaust installed.
