Questions on Brake Upgrades

Alright, I've put 15k of my own miles on my 04 Auto, and I am feeling the warped rotors every day now. Time to fix it. I plan to get the Rotora slotted rotors from Excelerate, but before I do, I have some questions. I've noticed that I am getting into the ABS a lot more often now than before. Is that because of the warped rotors trying to lock up, or am I just hammering the brakes harder as I get used to the car and driving a little harder?
Also, as far as a BBK, it greatly increases the stopping power of the brakes, but if my tires are already locking up with the stock setup, would stronger brakes make this even worse and cause the ABS to kick in more? Or would a brake upgrade (just rotors or even a BBK) help the brakes to apply more smoothly and not lock the rotors as much? Can anyone give me some real-world opinions?
One more. Do the Rotoras also eventualy start to warp as the stock rotors do and if so, is it possible to have slotted rotors re-surfaced to take out the warpage? Or do you have to spend the $ for all new rotors? How long have you guys been running the slotted rotors without any issues? I'm not looking for sales-speak. I want real-world experience. I want brakes that last longer than 15k miles with slightly aggressive driving. Thanks to all who reply.

going away from your brakes... how are your tires... abs kicking in means it wants to prevent ur tires from losing traction... so how is the treadwear? and more importantly what tires are you running?

aggressive driving will require high performance summer tires... slotted rotors are slotted to keep the rotors cooler which reduces the likely hood of them being warped... when you order your rotors make sure you get brake pads that will blend in with your style of driving

good luck hope this helped

I got my car with fairly new Kumho Ecsta tires. I would say they still have 60-70% tread left. I think they have about 25k miles on them now. They have been good tires, but i didn't used to drive it so hard. I did notice that the rears were feathering a little on the inside edge. I moved them to the front a few months ago during a service and have left them there to try and even them out (although the last service minder told me to rotate them.) I'll have a look at them again and maybe have them re-mounted and balanced. They are directional tires, so I can't swap sides without breaking them down. I do have a freind at the Nissan dealer who had mentioned before that he could do that for me sometime and even road-force balance them. He also mentioned that he could align the rear to stop the feathering, but it might affect cornering a little? true?? How much? I meant to mention the tires in my first post, but forgot. Thanks for the reply.

the slots on the side of the rotors main intent is to allow release of the hi pressure gas buildup that occurs under spirited braking- the slots give it somewhere to escape
Otherwise it can literally push the pads away from the rotor- while you are under hard braking effort- not a good thing~
They also serve as micro scrapers of the surface contaminents and brake dust that get on the rotor constantly. When you use the brakes they get cleaned off every time.

RacingBrake makes awesome slotted rotors and matched pads. ET300 series is good for street use- comparable to Hawk HPS. Check MrHeelToe in the Sponsored Sales area, and check Excelerate for rotoras
Most good slotted rotors will slowly wear away till the slot is gone- then new rotors.
That should be a few sets of pads before that occurs.
If prob before then- yes! they can be resurfaced at a machine shop- not the 5 dollar place

25k on khumo ecsta? yeah bro you definitely need new tires asap... the treadwear rating on the ecsta is low dude... ur tires are gonners...

tires and brakes should be your goal

I actually need brakes too, my ABS starts kicking in after moderate brake use especially during warm weather, tires are brand new Yokohoma WS4, not the best, they're decent, but I know my ABS isn't kicking in because of traction, it's because the brakes are dying out there.

I guess I could just ask excellerate.

Are you sure its the ABS- is it pulsing the brake pedal as the brakes are applied and released super fast- in order to make the locked up wheel keep turning?
When in doubt- check it out!
Rare to have ABS active because you need brakes or new tires in normal driving situations

ABS kicks in when the computer detects various inputs from the wheel speed sensors. If one wheel stops spinning when the others are still spinning (in other words, if you lock up a wheel) the ABS kicks in. That means lockup causes ABS. Lockup occurs when you lose traction on a braking wheel. If you are locking up or getting into the ABS a lot, you need BETTER TIRES.

For warping, you can only fix that with better rotors.

As mentioned, I really take another close look at Racingbrake. We have sold a lot of them here and get some really great feedback. They will basically be the last rotors you will need, and the best you can buy.

I have yet to be disproven on that point actually. Hear, read this stuff:

Kumho Ecsta tires

I also have Kumho Ecsta tires all around on my 04' TL. i have the exact same 'feathering' issue on my rears. i have had Kumhos before and love them. i too wonder what the feathering is all about......
i moved them up front and due to how they wore on the back, they are a bit noisy up font. i put about 2k on them and they seem to be better now. i think the problem would not have happend if i rotated them on a regular basis i like you should.....although in this case i didnt rotate on purpose becasue was trying to waste the last bit off my fronts so i couold get new ones.

The feathering has to do with the alignment angle. Its a form of advanced wear due to toe. It can be fixed, but it is not a huge deal unless the tires are actually wearing out.

The ROTORA's are less prone to "warpage" than the OE rotor. There are hundreds if not more than hundreds of AZ members running ROTORA rotors with great results b/c they don't warp like the stock rotors. There are some shops who will machine slotted rotors but you will have to locate one. Just make certain to bed the pads in properly, torque the lug nuts to 80 ft lbs of tq in a star pattern, and be easy on the brakes for a few hundred miles.

Go with the Racingbrake setup IMO. I have a set, put on 10k miles (guess) of HARD driving. No warping, no problems. Just consistent stopping power. Very nice set-up. My original rotors and pads were gone by 10k miles. This INCLUDED the part where I babied my car.
