Questions about Short Shifter installation

I'm about to order a comptech SS. Before I do anything I need to know for sure...

Will the SS fit an 07 Type S?

If someone who owns a Type S and has the SS could chime in, that would be awesome!
Ok, my installation question is this: At the end it says install the housing and fit the mounting bolts with 16 ft-lbs of torque. If I do not have anything capable of measuring torque, how can I wing this? What should that feel like to me?
Also, what can I use to get the lower dash appart? They mention something called a trim tool.

Thanks

Yes the SS fits the same on a type S - I installed mine a couple of months ago using no special tools. Just patience and this DIY...

Take your time and go slow, especially on the trim pieces.

Be sure to change your tranny fluid as well. The difference in the Acura stuff and the GM Syncromesh is unbelievable.

I installed the short shifter just last weekend and I should say it was really great. For a couple of days after the install it was hard to shift and I wondered if I made the mistake. But after changing the fluid to GM and after getting used to really is worth it.

Certainly use the trim tool. I got it in Sears for 3 bucks. You have to be patient and feel the tabs on the trim before it will come out. As for the mounting bolt I just tightened it the best I could (did not force it though). There is no moving part so I dont think it is that critical.

Also one thing I found that every step requires little effort if you know how to do it. For example the bushing on the shifter that needs to be removed comes of easily if you use the removing tool provided by comptech and leverage it against the side of the yellow shroud. This goes to removing the clips holding the gear cables, hard to reach bolts etc. Just think for a minute on the hard parts, to find the best way to do it and it comes easily.

BTW I entirely relied on the 3G garage DIY for the installation. Never even once looked at the instruction provided by Comptech.

my , on torque, have a scale at home, take something that weighs 16 lbs and see how hard it is to lift, use that same thought when trying to apply the torque w/out a torque wrench....my method of doing this has worked when rotating tires and so far no problems....good luck...

as far as the short shifter, do it ..............IMHO is the best mod as far....

And I thought that the stock shifter on 06 was already a short shifter... Definitely shorter than my stock beamer So, an aftermarket one has even shorter throws?

Yes. By at least 30-40%. Shoud have come from the factory like this. As others have said. Comptech SS plus GM Synchromesh is incredible.

There is nothing like this mod... It drastically reduces the throws to the point that if you drive one WITHOUT the SS, you will think it is horrible...

Easy to install.. just follow the guide and take your time.... It is seriously worth it, but it is not worth paying someone to do it...

Well I wasnt planning on putting GM syncromesh in anytime soon (dont want to void warranty). If I do not change out the tranny fluid, should I not install the SS?

Also, I guess if I ever needed warranty work I could just change back to Acura tranny fluid before I go in.

There have been a lot of threads on the GM fluid lately and ppl worried about voiding the warranty. I'll say it again here; there is no way they are going to know what fluid you have in the tranny. Even if they did take a sample and analyze it vs. the standard Honda fluid (VERY DOUBTFUL) then the chemical composition would be close anyway.

If you look in the owners manual they even state that you can run standard motor oil (10W-30) in case of emergency and change it out, "when convenient".

I worried about the warranty thing also but now kick myself for waiting so long to us the GM stuff. What's more likely to cause problems ? Clashing and pushing on the synchros all the time (with Acura MTF) or shifting smooth and easy with GM FM ? I realize there are some that fear long term compatibility issues but the difference is so dramatic I finally found it worth doing and not worrying so much.

As far as the SS kit I am on the fence about that. I'd think the dealer and Acura will give you lots more $hit about transaxle warranty issues with when they see an aftermarket SS kit on the car. Even so... I might just do it once the weather warms up around my parts.

What effect could the SS have on the transaxle?

None. I'm just saying if you have a problem they will assume you are more aggressive in shifting since you put a performance mod in the car. They might try and weasel out of fixing something. I'm not saying they are right...I am just saying they will try and use it as an excuse.

We have heard many accounts on the board of dealers tying to invalidate warranty "by osmosis". That is to say just having an aftermarket part near something OE that fails will cause some dealers to give you a hassle.
