pulley question

Al right I see a lot of talk about pulley upgrade. Now I don't know a lot about engine mods so definitely a noob question I am just curious as too what pulley your talking about...UR or a crank pulley(don't know if that even exists lol). But which ever it is what does it do and what is the advantage of moding it? Thanks for ur patience and help!

No prob man....its the crank pulley they are talking about thats manufactured by Unorthodox Racing...hense why they say UR pulley. It will make the car much more responsive off the start and less laggy. Personally...I highly recommend this mod as its cheap and easy. There are two different types you can get....SC or standard. The SC model is for Supercharged cars or cars with lots of electronic gear (high power stereo, ect) that retains the OEM size but is much lighter weight or there is an underdrive pulley that you can get that is underdriven and will result in a few extra ponies in naturally aspirated engines. I have had both....changed out to the standard sized one when you supercharge as an underdriven pulley will result in boost loss.

It is the crank pulley that is being replaced. The company that makes it is unorthodox racing, or know as UR, hence the name UR Crank Pulley.

The advantage of the UR pulley is less weight for the motor to turn. Less weigh means the motor can spin up faster. As well, there is an under-drive one which lowers the load on the motor by spinning the a/c, alternator and other stuff slower, thus achieving more of an effect. The downside to it is less electrical current and the A/C will shut off at around 4K RPM vs. 5K

The engine rotation drives the crankshaft.

At one end of the Crankshaft is the Drive Plate (Automatic) or Flywheel (Manual). At the other end of the Crankshaft is a pulley. That pulley connects via the serpentine belt to various accessories (Power Steering Pump, Alternator, etc).

So the engine rotation has to drive BOTH the wheels AND the Crankshaft pulley. Well, the stock OE pulley weighs about 8 lbs - it's freaking heavy. The Unorthodox Racing (UR) lightweight replacement pulley weighs about 1 pound.

That means the engine can send more energy to the wheels, because the UR pulley is MUCH (~8x) easier to get moving.

(maybe a bit oversimplified, but you get the idea)

see the gen2 DIY section- requires a 20$ special tool to hold stock pulley while removing it.
Or most shops will do it for about 60 bucks
Use GATES brand belt with the UR pulley- its shape matches that pulley groove better
Contact Excelerate- he sells them and can answer any questions

Hey slip, me and another guy are looking to do this. Maybe we can hit up a shop and get a discount

Or do it ourselves. I have access to a shop, tools, and lifts.

Only procedure in the service manual is use the hex tool. No diff MT & AT.

Also, Acura assumes you replace the pulley with another OE pulley, which has the Hex tool cutout -the UR after market pulley doesn't. So to install the UR pulley and torque, you have to improvise.

Is there something "official" or "common knowledge" at Acura we should know?

Do in a base TL not modded it would be best to use the larger pully?

Thanks for the responses and clearing that up for me.

^ It all depends on your car. Since you're stock, I would go with the underdrive (smaller diameter) pulley. If you have a supercharger or a system in mind, go with the stock sized pulley.

Anyone feel the difference between the stock size and underdrive? Is there much of a difference? I am leaning toward underdrive, but I have a moderate sound system and dont want to compromise the reliability of any other accys.. So may just go with stock size unless someone can let me know why I should Underdrive.. Basically is it worth it?

Underdrive = 1-2 whp more...

If you have a system, I'd go with the stock (even though the underdrive is OK for any systems up to 600W RMS I think).

Just ordered my underdrive
