Thats why I never put headers on either of my Maximas, too many people ended up with CELs that extenders or sims couldn't fix.

Seems that there isn't a problem with the J-pipes or PCDs on Honda/Acuras.

Not that I plan on doing any real performance mods to my car, but I have come to wonder why nobody really does any type of engine management around here? I come from a Subaru back ground and everything seemed to revolve around engine management for the smallest mods done to the car. It just seems like everyone slaps on exhaust parts and and an intake and doesn't want the car tuned to run at it's best. Is it not necessary to have a custom tune done on these cars? Is a simple ecu reset enough for the car to relearn the new parts that have been added? Or are people just not concerned about their car running at it's peak potential? Is there anything out here like the Cobb Accessport that plugs into the OBDII port in the car, where you can select maps for certain mods and then get the car custom tuned to get the most out of your modifications. I'm pretty new to the community and I am just curious about the whole engine management thing since it was brought up. Thanks guys.

Yes, I was reading through that, but is it a whole ECU replacement? Or is it like the access port that is plug and play and you will be able to keep adding maps to it as you increase mods to your car? Also it is a bit pricey, but I guess since there isn't much on the market as far as engine management is concerned, I guess you can charge that price for it. And I don't really need a huge post count to come to conclusions. Just because someone has a high post count doesn't mean they know what they are talking about. All those posts could have come from saying "dude your car looks cool" lol. I don't post a lot to avoid asking dumb noob questions. I try to post when I have an actual legitimate question, which I thought this was.

You really have to understand how complicated a TL is compared to a Subaru. This is a piggyback which allows full engine management and still maintain all of the other systems in the car.

Check out the Megasquirt 3, that is the new engine management solution here.

I know the cars are two different worlds, that's why I asked in the first place if engine management is really necessary or not based on the mods people are doing. I don't even care to do any performance mods to my car, but I am still curious to know about it, that's all.

KN_TL, nice setup btw. Great move on the Alky injection. I had that on my Subaru, great mod for adding power, cleaning the engine and keeping the intercooler ice cold. How much power are you putting down?

I agree with KN....TL is a different machine....

the 04 TL has been around for 8 years and only now we have the engine management.....

i suggest read the thread....there are couple other very impressive threads on the ECU....

in short, you pay $1225, you get the ECU, plug it in to your stock ECU and

then you fine tune it.....you will gain 20HP+/20TQ+ right out the box

No worries. I haven't had it on a dyno yet. I've got a couple things to do (injectors, head studs, etc) and then I'm going to go in and get it tuned. Too frigging cold up here right now to do anything so I am on hold until spring.

Oh ok, I see how it works now. Thanks for the clarification. Hopefully they come out with some better engine management systems as time goes on, but I guess manufacturers don't see the demand or view the TL as a car that really gets modified a lot such as a Honda, VW, or Subaru so they don't really try to come out with anything for the general masses. Hmm, maybe one day...

Yeah good idea. Your car is going to be a monster when it's complete. Good luck with everything! Any idea how much torque the trans can hold? That's the first thing that comes to my mind when power and torque starts to increase.

We'll find out

There are a couple others (bmeyer, libert69) who are building true monsters. Full internal builds.

Wow, that's pretty amazing then! Sorry I keep comparing everything to Subaru, but the WRX tranny was glass once too much torque was introduced. I killed 2nd gear top and bottom and I was at 375 ft lbs. Took a while to do since I drove like an actual adult and didn't ram through gears, drag, or track the car. I bought PPG gears for my trans, (4,300 for gears alone) straight cut 1,2. helical cut 3-5. The STi trans could hold 500+ though. I'm glad our trans' can hold that much torque because buying gears that will last aren't cheap.

Lol, great. Another reason why I will not do performance mods to this car. I'm not going through all that again! Purely looks this time. The power the car has stock is good enough for me.

with this ECU (its coming i should be around 290-ish)

Unless you have this installed......

There was some work being done with gear/gearset's but that person trashed his ride. But I can see Rodney doing something in that area if there is enough interest. Not something for anyone with shallow pockets.

I totally agree about the maintenance part. I plan keeping this car a while so I'm going to be on top of doing everything to keep it in proper running order.

258, iirc. The SAE revised the HP test standard (to include driven accessories for one thing). This resulted in a re-rating of HP. Under the current standard the 3.2L '04 - '08 TL has 258 (iirc) HP. 3.5L TL-S has 286 (iirc) HP.

The engine did not change output at all; only the way HP is rated changed.
