Open Y-pipe!!

So I took a couple video clips today of just the big a$$ Magnaflow resonator with no mufflers. I'm going to send the VTs back to Dynomax for a refund.

Enjoy Yes I missed 3rd on the in-car vid And I wasn't even shifting that hard lol.

strange how you're an Accord owner, posting info about your accord on a TL forum, found on a website for Acura enthusiests.

nontheless, I love the Accord coupes, especially this generation and the one before it. Thats a REALLY nice sounding exhuast, how much did it set you back? Magnaflow makes some pretty good shyt.

Sigh...I know it's not a TL. If I posted in the "car talk," I feel no one would post anything (though hardly any do anyway). I feel it's a community and since the Accord is VERY similar (minus exterior) to the TL, that I'd post. Same seats, same motor (minus .2L), same basic options, same mods, etc. But yes, I know it's not a TL so my bad. If the mods want to move it, then okay.

Sometimes I forget this is a TL forum since I post a good amount. I figured since the performance mods are the same (mostly what I'm into) that it really didn't matter.

Thanks. It's actually just 3" piping and a bigass 30" body Magnaflow resonator (part# 12641) to an open Ypipe. It's right under the sway bar, so it's REALLY loud in the car. It sounds so good in the car though it's hard to really be upset.

It definitely pulls harder than with the mufflers. I break traction in 1st (something I didn't do with the VT mufflers) and it seems to push me back into the seat more. I'm sending the mufflers back and getting a refund. Still not sure what I'm actually gonna do. I may just get a smaller resonator and then run straight pipes back from the Y split. Or I may get 2 small Magnaflow mufflers. I just LOVE the aggressive tone this has and don't want it to change! I just want the drone to be lessened tenfold lol.

lol I was just being a smartass... I actually don't mind. I saw a really sexy accord just like the OP's, slammed to the floor. the color was really really close to AM (a shade darker), and the exhaust note was just as nice as the OP's. I used to have a beat up civic before I went to the TL, HATED that car. I'm saying civic suck, they don't, it was just that one in perticular. Any way, do ALL the parts of a TL fit onto the accords? I know the new accords have the same engine as the 04-08 model TL's, or so I've heard.

The labor for the install and piping was $400. The mufflers were $200 and the tips $55. Total ~$650. But minus the mufflers $450 until I decide what I'm doing lol.

Everything but the intake manifold fits I believe, but I could be wrong it might. The new Accord has the J35z(8?). It's a "detuned" version of the Type S motor.

Btw, you think 2 small mufflers would really reduce the power? It'll cut down the drone but I'm pretty sure you'll still have the power there, right?

Depending how well they flow, they may. I definitely feel a difference going open Y pipe compared to the VT mufflers. And it's 100% NOT because of the increase in sound. It feels more torquey and powerful throughout the entire RPM range.

I may dyno without mufflers lol but then again, Idk if that would be a fair comparison.

Thanks guys. This was awhile ago, it sounds much different now. Custom Jpipe with a Venturi merge collector (courtesy of SPDexhaust.com) and a full 3" exhaust splitting to dual 2.5" after the Ypipe to Dynomax mufflers.

Yes I am. This is exactly what we had talked about; just the 12641 and no mufflers. I will say it sounded very aggressive though. Although now it sounds just as aggressive I feel, even with the Ultra flow mufflers. They are about as straight through as you can get and actually far exceed my exhaust CFM rate. My cousin's friend used to have them on his 9 second Stang lol.

This is the merge collector that I spent too much money on, although it looks very nice.

And this is how it sounds now.

Oh I miss being able to spin 2'nd gear. Sounds good I know L.I. is south of CT but didn't think it was warm enough for the locust to still be out

Should've just kept the resonator and put some tips at the end of the pipe. Would've helped in weight reduction as well lol

Oh no, I took this video awhile ago. Probably back in August/September.

I still have the resonator, just added the Dynomax Ultra Flows. It was way too loud for a daily.

In the vids, the open-Y doesn't seem that loud (from the outside) to not be DD. Perhaps a subjective thing? I'll find out soon firsthand Don't you miss the performance of the open-y versus extra mufflers?

It didn't sound loud. You said you had crazy cabin noise and drone becuz it was under the car all open. if you add pipes and let the exhaust leave at the end of the car, would it reduce the drone and also muffle the cabin noise?

I will agree and say it doesn't sound that loud in this video. It kind of shocked me as I watched it yesterday, but it was very loud inside the car. Yes, it was probably because the exit was indeed, right under the rear seats. I actually thought about just elongating the midpipe and putting tips on, but was thrown off on how loud it was in the cabin. I didn't think just extending the midpipe and putting tips would decrease it that much, and I really don't know if it would've. I ultimately wanted a quiet cabin while not really being concerned on the volume outside the car.

In these videos, it sounds as if my current setup is actually louder than the open Ypipe. But it can't be.

Honestly I didn't notice any performance difference. I want to disconnect the Ypipe again to see how it sounds/performs now because I really didn't notice any difference at all. I think the Ultra Flow mufflers are named just that for a reason. They REALLY don't impede flow at all. And they sound SO raw, which I love.

Really? I think it sounds better now. I'd go so far as to say it sounds even more 'raw' than it did open Y...

Sonnick,

I just now compared the videos, side by side, of the open-y versus ultraflow. And, I still pick the open-y.

I can understand how you would say the ultraflow is more raw. The ultraflow has a deep low-tune growl that is more refined in it's nature. Whereas the open-y is an unrefined howl that has less bass tone.

But according to my twisted taste, and that is in essence what we are doing is comparing preferences, the win goes to the open-y. I like the "In Your Face" unrefined howl versus the throaty growl.

Both systems are close sounding to one another. Both are great sounding to me. But the thing that really cinches the deal in favor of the open-y is that popping when you take your foot off of the throttle. I LOVE THAT. Hell, I would love to see flames too if it was possible (like an Evo).

I am so glad that we all had this discussion today. Prior, I had been parnoid that the huge 30" Magnaflow would not be loud enough for my taste. And after this discussion today, I placed a rush order for the 18" Magnaflow (12649). After a lot of deep thought, I decided that I want a "in your face" exhaust sound. Popping would be icing on the cake too if I could get that.

PCD ---> XLR8 Jpipe ---> 18" Magnaflow --------------------> (single rear exit)

The reason that I think that I can pull this off is because of my lightweight. Driving with normal traffic, I barely open the throttle and seldom go above 2300 RPM. So, I can pretty much command what my exhaust volume is at any given moment.

Construction starts next week.

Sonnick, I know this is old. Hope you see this. I'd love a similar sounding setup on my 3G TL. What was your exhaust setup in this video? Was it literally JUST no mufflers? If so what resonator did you have? Or did you remove all 3 muffs and resonator? Were you stock from 3rd cat up to block then?

I currently have just rear muff deletes. Like the sound a lot, but want it a little louder.

And yeah, I can't wait til summer so I can chirp 2nd again xD
