Which one is the 3rd-cat?

Acura Tl exhaust system parts

I have question about the 3rd-cat regarding it's location and what it do.

First of all, is that the location of 3rd-cat in a tl that everybody is talking about that will result me more power and great sound by simply getting rid of this?

Also, what is 3rd-cat's primary duty? What is it designed to do ?

Sorry about so much newbs question, I'm beginner trying to switch my exhaust system to gain more power and throaty sound..

Part number 1 is the third cat. You have the mid muffler circled, you can delete it for a little more sound

If I take that mid-muffler out, i don't need to replace with anything else ?
Wouldn't the pipe be short then ?

Replace with a straight pipe. Any exhaust shop should be able to weld one in for you.

You can replace the 3rd cat with a test pipe and not have a CEL but you won't pass emissions if your state does a visual inspection. Replacing it with a test pipe might give you some marginal gains in power and sound but don't expect much, its actually pretty free flowing. Same with the mid-muffler (what you circled), some minor gain in exhaust sound but since it is a straight thru design, don't expect any performance gains.

Your best bet would be to replace the factory J-pipe and 3rd cat with a long tube J-pipe, remove the mid muffler and replace it with a straight pipe and swap out the factory resonator with a Magnaflow or Dynomax resonator. The J-pipe will give you a noticeable performance gain and removing the 3rd cat, mid-muffler and changing the resonator will increase the sound of the exhaust without making it obnoxious.

As Scottwax mentioned you can replace the 3rd cat as it is not monitored by a sensor. You won't get a check engine light, but there is a small chance you won't pass emissions if you go through a visual. That being said, most of our customers still pass since the precats are left in place.

He also mentioned you will get a noticeable power gain from deleting the 3rd cat, which is true as well. Deleting the third cat frees up a lot of power since the oem cat is very restricting. We have our V2 J-Pipe available on our website for $475 not including shipping.
