Oil catchcan?

so i know that usually these are more applied to FI engines, but does anyone see this as a benefit to us in the NA TL? and im not talking about the bling aspect because i plan to do the homemade HD version...

i know a few members have them installed, but i guess this is good insurance if you drive your car hard and want to prevent any blowby from entering your TB/IM...

thoughts from you engine gurus???

honestly...unless your rings are really shot, there shouldn't be any blow back coming outta the valve cover...any blow by is taken care of the pcv system in the car already, and there should be zero blow back outta the valve covers, assuming ur motor is in good running condition...the most id tell you to do is, remove the hose that runs from the valve cover to the intake and clamp a small breather filter on the valve cover, and just plug the intake, to avoid vaccum leaks.

for FI...i ran the motor without any catch cans...and while it ran good, there was no blow back...it only did it after the ring lands broke, and compression leaked through, causing a lot of blow back...now with custom pistons and rings, and a bigger piston-sleeve-ring gap, there's zero blow back...so you see, if everything is correctly sealed and everything runs smooth, even with little FI, the need for a catch can is almost zero....i still dont run one, and if anything, id just install a breather filter.

someone else will have a different opinion....im throwing this at you from my own experience with the 3G TL...

other applications, especially when they run a lot of boost...motors build with a bigger piston-sleeve gap to allow some pressure to escape, when running high boost, the stock pcv systems wont be able to handle it all, and that's when you install a catch can.

btw, the stock pcv has a small can...a tiny little one lol...open it up and see if there's anything in there.

I think an oil separator is needed. I get a good bit between oil changes. Don't know if it's because i'm high miled.

https://acurazine.com/forums/showthr...=730870&page=2

I use to have a oil catch can on my old turbo eclipse; that was needed.

IMO catch cans are useful. I have buddies with FI applications running them. There engines are healthy on compression and everything but they are pushing around 600-700 whp daily so that might be a difference. Some NA cars need a catch can. My friends NA1 NSX swapped with the newer C32 has blowby like a dirty mofo when he gets on it and the engine still is good. I think it depends on motor design and placement. I know for sure cars like the older 350z had an oil consumption issue stock. Its a nice safety to have. Either way they are cheap and easy to install. You can pick one up and install it for show if you wanted to it is still functional.

like i said...im not against them...they are necessary in many cases...i was just referring to my own experience with our 3G TL...and did specify that, assuming ur motor is in good running condition, you shouldn't need it.

like J1n said...$15...heck go for it

You can home make it or purchase one. I can get them from a friend locally for 30 bucks lol. It doesnt have to be name brand but obviously if it is you will pay a pretty penny for one. Me and my buddies just use replicas unless they have a show car they usually go name brand parts.

Hmmm, may get one of these kits. I plan on keeping the TL-S for some years to come.

theres is always blowby...especially in FI application...my point was, its not more than the stock pcv system can handle...otherwise it would blow back out through the valve cover....and also the intake manifold would be soaked in oil, just like it did when my ring lands were destroyed, and the pcv system couldn't handle it all....im constantly inside that motor, and i never miss a thing...the only thing inside the intake manifold is the pink color from the methanol lol, but no oil....i might do it, just to do it, in the near future
