non-name brand intake question...

Last time as was at the auto parts store (autozone) i notice they have prefabricated large(er) diameter(i.e.-larger diameter then stock) metal intake tubing to modify/fabricate your own intake with cone style filter...is there any reason why i shouldn't fabricate my own intake with this prefabricated tubing?(they have all sorts of tubing and pre bent angles and connecters available) I mean I know many here have AEM intakes or injen intakes or fujita intake systems, but is there really a difference between spending hundreds of dollars on a name brand and fabricating one myself?

obviously there is a satisfaction in knowing that the intake system was professionally made and has some possitive affects suchas being quieter or having higher HP gains...and none of that is gaurenteed with making one up yourself but is it worth taking a chance?

p.s. Obviously i would spend money on a good filter...

Well. There's the big issue of making sure it will actually fit... then making sure it will stay on, stay together, and wont vibrate or hit anything. how much will this little project cost you? If its fairly cheap, what the heck give it a shot.

If you arent subject to local or state emission laws or dont mind swapping when the time comes to get smogged, I dont see a problem with this. I made an intake for my old integra out of tubing and it worked great.

I actually made a 4inch short ram intake for my TL last time I was there. Great intake, and not bad in power either. It was a bit too loud for my taste, after a while so I put the stock back and and I'll probably be keeping it stock until the comptech comes out.

I sat in a TL with a AEM cai, and the 4 inch was very deep compared to it. It wasn't anything rice, but it was a nice deep growl. Only reason I didn't like it that much was because I've had a bad experience with intakes in the past...got my first ticket while hitting vtec (w/intake) and I was just traumatized ever after. =(

Well...here's how it looks

about a 2' length of universal intake tubing (chrome 3" dia.) - $49.99
Additional tubing parts (chrome) (22 degree, 45 degree bends, etc) - $7-$10
Coupler (for smaller dia. piping to larger dia. piping) - $7-$10
Cheap cone style air filter - $25.00

i guess i may as well spend the money on a name brand...

Truth is, unless you already have the filter, or a few of the parts already handy, there really isnt much savings you can get out of it.
