My TL engine runs a lot smoother in rainny or wet days. Bad Enginer mount?

Is that possible that I had a bad engine mount? WHen the weather is wet it obsorbs the moisture and becomes effective? Im goint to ask dealer to take a look.

BTW, I usually feel a big shock when shifting to R on my 5AT, which I didn't have on my 03 TL. Is that another evident for bad engine mount?

So that I can try to help please clarify:

What absorbs the moisture?
What becomes effective?
Define shock...electric or physical?
Why do you think its an engine mount?

Please note that almost everything runs better when moisture is present in the air...makes the air more dense (such as the water injection jet engines on our B-52s and KC-135 aircraft when I was in the USAF...significantly increased engine thrust for heavy takeoffs)

I know that my 03 Silverado SS purrs like a kitty when it is wet/cool.

Dude, the only thing that's going to make all your weird TL issues/worries go away (scraping air dam, non-flat hood, wet weather engine response, noise , 2G is still better than 3G, Popularity of the TL, etc..) is to begin HERE

Otherwise, just sell it if it's such a POS.

You're obviously just here to bitch about a car you feel is subpar.. You have started a ton of threads here which all have the same whiney tone. Either get over it, drive the car off a cliff, or trade it!

The motor mounts are big rubber things, they may have liquid inside, I dont know,
but its just rubber on the outside, water wont change its operation.
Its a good sign when an engine runs better in the wet, if things are right, it should, as the moisture in the air adds power output.
During WW2, the Germans used water injection in some of their aircraft as a boost. There is nothing like cool moist air to make a motor purr, as long as it does not effect the spark. In the old days, people with bad wires and/or distributor caps would have problems, but modern coil on plug engines should never have that problem.

my theory is the rubber part in the engine mount absorbs moisture and is able to dampen the mechanical shock and vibration better.

on my 05 5AT, WHen shifting to R, i can feel the car shudders and hear a pretty loud noise that sounds like somebody hits the concrete wall with his fist. While driving you can feel the engine vibration.

on my 03 5AT, WHen shifting to R, you feel nothing and hear a slight "clunking" sound. Almost no engine vibration is felt during when the car is moving.

The above are talkina about a dry day. On a wet day, things changed for the 05 TL, no shudder is felt and vibration isolated, almost behave like a 03 TL on a dry day. Thats why i suspect the engine mount.

Hope this help you help me diagnose.

Chiefsusaf and Brett

You guys are saying wet air makes engine have better output (performance, torque...), I am talking about wet air makes it run smoother ( less vibration and noise), ...

Are they related issues?

Tough to say...if you are experiencing it as such it may be because the moisture in the air may just be insulating some of what you experience when it is dryer...just a thought.

Not another "My 05TL does this, my 03TL didn't.." thread by you. I have an 02 TL and I like it but it makes a noise when shifted from R to D5, it makes a noise when I start it and the engine is cold that cannot be explained, it creaks and squeaks and has imperfections.

I think the rainy day smoothness of your TL is a perception rather than a characteristic. On rainy days you drive differently (or you should) and this could be the explanation.

i agree with u.....my car feels the same way
in fact, the colder outside, the more vibration i have...

Rubber does not absorb moisture.

When its cold out, the rubber will get stiffer, all rubber gets harder when it gets colder, I think almost everything gets stiffer as it gets colder...

Cars with fluid filled mounts should get even stiffer with the cold than rubber
I would think, but motor mounts should warm up quickly.

I would say that rain and rubber mounts do not react to each other, now maybe heat would make the rubber mounts softer, and I agree with the one who says that when cold the cars has more vibration and is from the tires having been sitting overnight developing a "flat" spot and it goes away once the steel belts inside them become warm/ flexible...( I don't have a garage and my cars sleep outside in my driveway, on cold days I have this "thump" for about 3 blocks and it dissaperars.
One more thing guys, if you drive in or on snow covered roads, the snow/ salt/ mud will cake up inside the rims, the snow will melt but the mud will act as a "weight" making you feel you lost a weight , check this out before you call for an appointment to get the wheels balanced, the will wash your tires and check the balance and if OK you will still be charged as if they actually balanced your tires ( it happend to me with my 1st car, live and learn).

Okay so what's in the TL's mounts? Are they vacuum mounts, rubber, or fluid/hydraulic?
