Mods for 2008 TL base 5AT

I read through the mod thread about using 3.7 manifolds and TB's but I'm a bit lost as that thread got a bit confusing. I'm about to purchase the J-Pipe, cat delete and exhaust but I'm confused on what I need to purchase in terms of J37 parts for my J32. Also would the Hondata software be beneficial in making more power with those parts? Thanks in advance!

I have an '06 so I haven't investigated the hondata solution since it's not available for me. However, here's a list of stuff you'll need for the IM mod. You won't need the IM cover (in red below) since the 07-08 cover will fit. Not sure on the supporting hardware. I'm guessing if your cover fits you wouldn't need that either.

I haven't done this mod yet so I'd do some more homework or wait until someone else can confirm the parts below. I have the IM but still working on getting the TB and cover. Those are the expensive parts

The list posted earlier:

94050-08080 NUT, FLANGE (8MM) 4 $0.19 $0.76
95701-08060-08 BOLT, FLANGE (8X60) 4 $0.88 $3.52
17105-RCJ-A01 GASKET, IN. MANIFOLD 1 $36.75 $36.75
92900-08050-3B BOLT, STUD (8X50) 4 $0.81 $3.24
17160-RK2-A00 MANIFOLD, IN. 1 $224.75 $224.75
16176-RYE-A10 GASKET, THROTTLE BODY 3 $0.47 $1.41
16400-RYE-A11 THROTTLE BODY, ELECTRONIC CONTROL (GMD8B) 1 $192.54 $192.54

In addition, the IM cover and the supporting hardware:

IM:
003 17140-RK1-A01 COVER, IN. MANIFOLD (UPPER) 001 2010 TL 226.98 170.24

004 17146-R70-A01 GASKET, IN. MANIFOLD COVER (UPPER) 001 2010 TL 26.00 19.50

Yeah, not a ton. I'd bet somewhere around 8-10 whp at most. Just a wild guesstimate based on some of the dyno's in the 3.7 IM thread. I'm only doing it because I've done every other bolt on short of a catback and I plan on keeping the car for a long time. If you're not in that boat I probably wouldn't do it just yet. Exhaust mods are much more effective as well as weight loss mods.

the 07-08 IM cover plate will only fit if it's a Type-S. A base 3.2 TL from 07-08 cannot re-use the cover.

any 3.2 TL is going to require a new cover plate to go along with the 3.7 manifold.

i was second guessing myself on this and in comparing the parts right now it does in fact look like the '07-08 BASE cover plate will fit the 3.7 manifold!

Good news for 07-08 base TL owners, then

So with full bolt-ons, 3.7 parts I'll see maybe 8-10hp? Total waste of money!

^no.
you didnt read correctly.

You asked "what kind of hp gains can I expect from these parts"

These parts indicating the 3.7 manifold and throttle body upgrade.
which will give you a gain of about 10hp. ABOUT.

Also, the TL isnt a muscle car.
nor is it a tuner car.
you cant extract easy hp for cheap.
especially if you're auto.

^^^ 2008white diamond...actually I do not believe $450 for 10 whp is a total waste of money...compared to a cat-back which is at least twice that price that *might* gain you that much, the IM/TB isn't too shabby...

With Flashpro, it will probably yield even more...I'm just waiting for more before/after dynos on a Base or Type-S TL until I pull the trigger on the IM/TB...

I wasn't suggesting the TL was a muscle and or high performance car. Given these J Series V6's are in mild states of tune from the factory I was simply looking to see what gains I could make.

sorry if I sounded harsh.
like fender roller stated a tune is now available for the 07-08 tl's.

there are some cars on here pushing about 300wheel horse power N/A
and a few that are in the 320wheel hp range N/A

but it takes dedication and $

In all honesty, I'm curious as to why an auto suffers a disadvantage?
I'm assuming mechanical transference?

I've asked other folks about the difference between the two trannies and all I've gotten is a manual can shift faster(with skill), greater control with a manual, and one guy told me a manual gearbox holds 5% more torque than an auto.

I would like to understand it better.

the manual tranny weighs less.
it also has the better gearing.
another benefit is that there are less drive train losses.

weight is a killer. if the TL weighed a couple hundred pounds less, it would accelerate and corner better.
the 6MT is at an advantage because it is lighter than an automatic tranny.

Gearing!
its at a mechanical advantage.

lastly, the automatic transmission robs a lot of power.
the engine transfers power to the transmission and then to the wheels.

To expound a little on Justin's explanation, the manual provides a more direct and solid link to the engine. There's nothing that moves when the car is gear...the clutch grabs the flywheel and does not move (unless the clutch is slipping of course). The automatic has the torque converter in between the engine and gears which does lock at a certain point but is filled with fluid and is still just another thing between the engine and ground. From what I understand, the more moving parts between the engine and wheels and also the longer the distance between them, the more parasitic driveline loss...

I'm not a big fan of the 5AT in my TL as my previous CL-S 6MT and our 2 S2000's have spoiled me. I looked for a TL-S 6MT and I found one about an hour from me but it had 90k and he still wanted $25k. The one I really wanted was a 08 WDP TL-S 6MT over black/white with under $30k but it was in Texas and I'm in Ky. I should have just took the chance to fly down to purchase. The new 6AT's are much better as the ratios make much more sense, they're more responsive, efficient and refined. I really wish Acura would offer the new 7DCT across the board!!!

So When you did the 3.7/zdx swap why not use the outlaw or p2r IM gasket while you are at it?

^ I left the IM gasket in place. I ordered all this stuff simply because it was on the list then realized later that I probably didn't need the IM gasket. Oh well, $36 bucks :P
