Modifying Stock Airbox
Modifying Stock Airbox
Has anyone modified their stock airbox to get better flow? I thought I read something on it here, but a search couldn't find anything. I don't like the idea of a K&N (or similar) filter protecting my engine and most of the CAI's use this style. I believe that a conservatively modified air box can give pretty much what you get from aftermarket CAI with none of the negatives (possibility of water damage, lowered torque, dealers hassles while in warranty). From my "old-school" hotrod days, I recall this was done cheaply and with good results vs. $$ paid. Thanks. Steve

I removed my stock resonator yesterday with the help of this thread.

Also I replaced the stock filter element witha K/N OEM replacement for better airflow.

It took all in all about an hour to remove everything because there are some bolts that in odd places that require some awkward reaching.
Then I used the piece that is circled

to make my own CAI like the picture in the post above.
It was worth the time it took to remove and install the filter. $30 for the filter on ebay for a decent HP gain based on my butt dyno and a nice growl when you floor it.
Also if you take apart your stock airbox you will notice that there is a deflector in that channels the air in a specific way to your filter. I read on here somewhere that people removed it trying to utilize more of the filter. But there is not proof that it helps anything.

First time i heard about ram air on ours. Will make tubbing from trottle body to box, make a way to open the box with a slidding door incase of floods. K&N of course (Proven gains, pays for it self, and better sound.) will make tubbing to lower grill for the intake if not to hard/seams unsafe, or can't find metteral needed installing my self. Deffently Will put Tuorado in intake. ASSURE a couple h.p. and gas millage increases from first hand experience in 3 family cars with Torando. Besides reasonable price/eassy to install. REMEMBER COLD AIR improves engine profamce all around. They make a rap around sleave for intake tube that shown great increase for cheap. Last for about 2-4 hours the longer recharged but can keep it on as long as you want. It's Chill Factor Perforamce Inc. (don't know web site, never seen it in stores). Different sizes to fit any application, Cheap, no tools, recharges in hours, and does,t sweet on elec.. Coolder more denisty of air in chamber. Swirling air and fuel mixture is more efecent. so these are for the low budget gains.
